OP (and those that are offended by dude, buddy, boss, etc) - I think between this thread and the lady/ma’am thread my curiosity has been pricked. could you answer the following questions:
are you under 28?
have you ever managed a team before (hire / fire authority)?
have you worked a blue collar job (in high school, college)?
is this your first job?
People keep saying offended. It doesn’t offend me, I just don’t like it and I think it’s unprofessional. There’s a big difference.
Mid 30’s.
Yes, I’ve managed teams/departments with 50+ individuals.
Yes, I’ve worked a blue collar job before.
Definitely not my first job.
Wow i didnt know people get upset by this.. i call my leaders boss all the time.. totally fine being called buddy and i call my peers my good buddies too.. wow how would folks know this offends people?? Its not a curse word or anything, just being friendly..
EY5, you clearly have a selective reading problem as I’ve stated it doesn’t offend me. I’m just not a fan of it and I don’t think they should be used in a professional setting. Please get over your need for degrading others.
Sorry to hear it, chief
Big fan of “Chief”, Chiefy
Say I’m not your guy, pal
I’m not your ass, man
I hate it when someone calls me buddy.
Chin up buttercup
I couldn’t care less about how people address me.
Unless it’s something specifically for you and only you... then it’s weird.
Might be helpful if you told us how you prefer to be referred as so we stop hurting your feelings?

I had a boss who used to call me either Jean-Michel or Zoubir, depending on his mood. My name is neither of these.
Anyone watched Devil wears Prada, the head honcho lady boss calls her new assistant the same name as her other assistant who has been there longer....it is too much effort for her to remember two separate names.
We could call you sweetheart, darling, dear, missy, hun, or any of the other names I get called regularly as a woman. Personally, I’d take boss over those any day
Outrage? Ha, far from it. None of this outrages me. I just dislike being referred to by either of those names. It doesn’t anger me or cause outrage. Of course there could always be worse nicknames. We could go on forever about what nicknames are worse. I was simply referring to those names I mentioned to see the opinion of others.
When I was an intern after freshmen year UG (not at a consulting firm) one of my older co-workers called me “buddy” and “little guy” a few times. I almost told him to stfu once or twice. Looking back I really should’ve.
I take solace in the fact that he’s still stuck at that shitty company.
I was called tubby by my first boss out of college so it could be worse, slick.
No, I said I was 240 then for context, and answered the question of my gender. I also had a childhood of bullying that was a lot worse than just name calling. In the grand scheme of things, it didn't matter to me.
Over the years I learned to stand up for myself when it counts, not just when some geriatric geezer tried to get a rise out of me. They don't get free rent in my head.
Wouldn’t spend one iota of my day letting something as small as that bother me.
OK. KoKo the Monkey it is.

I’m British so I call everyone mate
Kid - reserved for children, sounds patronizing
Guy - ok IMO, as long as you identify as a guy
Buddy - reserved for dogs, woof woof
Boss - ok if you are their boss, can be snarky otherwise
Boss seems to be especially prevalent with Indian co-workers. Not sure, but even though it rubs me wrong, it doesn't seem to be meant disrespectfully.
Intent does not matter
I agree. I dislike overuse of familiar terms in the workplace like buddy or pal. Also agree w OP that I'm not offended by them.
I now ask people quite directly how they want to be addressed.
If they ask me I instruct them to address me as "Guv'nor". "Senator" sounded to pretentious imo.
I like “bruh"
