Meritocracy is one of the best ideologies of the modern world. Was reflecting about what it means and the importance of it - it’s a shame that today’s culture is trying to pivot away/“cancel” it. Just a midday meeting thoughts lol Work hard and reap the fruits of your labour.

No one is arguing to get rid of meritocracy, just to acknowledge and work towards fixing the fact that meritocracy isn’t as simple for everyone. In a race to the attic, some people get to start on the main floor, and others have to start in the basement. And some in the basement have to get past a padlock on the door on the way up Doesn’t mean getting from the main floor to the attic is easy or without work, but that it’s a hell of a lot harder climbing from the basement

BCG1 - the intent of what you listed (minimum wage, education, healthcare) is fine. But why is it that rich parents ignore public schools and send their kids to private school? Why is school district a huge factor in choosing where to buy a home, and that homes in “better” school districts are way more expensive. The public school system is okay at best and mediocre at worst. Like any other government program, there’s no accountability for poor performance and little incentive for good performance. Healthcare is jacked up in this country - not sure why it’s associated with employment. But access to health care is just one part of it. The US has the highest quality of care in the world despite the byzantine regulations throughout. Minimum wage is great in intent, but I simply am asking if it’s not discriminatory against persons with little skill or experience? Today’s market shows how hard it is to get qualified workers. Companies have to pay for talent to survive, but at the same time do I want to pay minimum wage for every applicant? Probably not, therefore that person stays unemployed.

Meritocracy and quotas cannot coexist. At Accenture there is a commitment from leadership to be 50% women across the board. That means meritocracy goes out the window. Not necessarily a bad thing, but I wish leaders would have the gonads to call it what it is.

So long as one person is marginally prettier, taller, or has a more charming smile than another - bias will continue to exist. This utopian view from D2 is unrealistic in our current universe.

Meritocracy is a dead concept. We can’t even be close to having meritocracy until we do away with inheritance, which is not going to happen.

likefunny

It’s embarrassing that people think they can have both. In fact, the people whom I’ve heard bring up the meritocracy card as a means of justifying their claim, bc they feel their group is being slighted, are those who are in a privileged group of some sort or are looking at an inheritance coming in. (Spoiler alert: I fall into both categories and will be giving away my inheritance to underserved communities)

A4 - that isn’t meritocracy. But pretending meritocracy doesn’t exist is absurd. It’s not always perfect, but generally we have a meritocratic society. Part of life is a social element. Simply doing good work and hoping someone will notice, acknowledge, and promote you isn’t the best approach. Some level of networking is going to come into play - we aren’t robots.

Why work hard when it's easier to complain and get hand outs, sympathy and freshly printed cash? Working hard is for suckers these days.

McK2 you might live in a bubble of similar coworkers and type A friends. I know lots of average folks from high school who simply cannot do what we do. It might look like just slides, but dealing with clients, deadlines, executives, driving business, travel and our level of stress is not for everyone. Also, many homeless people have mental health and drug issues that simply aren't easy to solve, but maybe your homeless guy will be type A and just down on his luck like Will Smith in Pursuit of Happyness

The problem with the people who champion meritocracy is they live in the delusion that everyone has somehow started out on a sufficiently even playing field that a meritocratic outcome is even possible. The people arguing in favor of DE&I initiatives are simply trying to point out that you cannot have a meritocracy when everyone faces different challenges in the workplace and in their professional development. Lastly, there is no such thing as a consistent definition of "meritocracy" - each organization champions different strengths and behaviors, and so "true" meritocracy is just a fantasy. Is it the most intelligent? Charismatic? Hard-working / diligent? Connected? The definitions are so poorly defined in most organizations that saying it's one of the "best ideologies" is just an incredibly facile misunderstanding of organizational dynamics in real companies.

Some might say meritocracy is an apathetic system. Meritocracy implies there is a fair way to judge merit and subsequently reward. That is at odds with reality. It would have to be a homogenous pool of talent to judge and assign rewards in a pure meritocracy.

Also, how is the culture of the other firms. Im not opposed to moving firms.
