I think you’ll be able to find what your looking for in just about every zone 2 suburb (except maybe inner west). I would recommend moving close to your friends who live in London. It makes a huge difference being able to walk to see friends, especially in these times
Wandsworth probs has your budget and Putney is nearby and great
How many bedrooms? If 1 bed then 1.2k can get you a range of flats in zone 2. Any other preferences?
Ya 1 bed is enough I think
If you guys are happy to share one bed maybe look at woolwich/greenwich new flats with one bedrooms - maybe a bit over 1.2k in total but won't be too much. (I assume you say central London meaning the city of london?)
Oh I never experienced or seen anything bad loving here alone as a short single female, I think if OP gets a proper flat it would be north of the main road (riverside) and the area is brand new full of young professionals who take DLR to commute to Bank or Canary Wharf every morning
There are some other threads on location, could be worth a look

Northwest London. Try West Hampstead, wilsden green, temple fortune,
Worth also looking west so Maida Vale, around portobello road, towards Earl’s Court area
You're going to have a rough time with that budget. Either crap flat, crap area, or crap commute - most likely a combination of all three.
Your best bet is to hunt south of the river along the overground train lines to the most convenient major station.
I think this may have been true pre-covid, but right now you should be able to find decent flats at that price. Set up automatic alerts on openrent etc. and you should be fine!
Agree with this ^ Move near your friends - especially at the moment with COVID. Being able to walk to parks near my friends or to beer gardens in the Autumn was a game changer.
You should look in wanstead! It's a great village feel, less than 30 minutes into central, plenty of green space, and lots of local independent shops. I've lived here for 2 years now after living in Southwark and Clapham and I absolutely love it.
Pretty much everywhere in London is safe for civvies... unless you sell coke instead of sniff it?
