Agree with A1. Please don't let it be a *surprise*. A dog is a huge time, labor, emotional, and financial commitment for both parties involved. I hope that this has been discussed with your partner. Also, some breeds really need to be stimulated more so than others, so there are varying degrees of that to also consider.

I specifically told my partner never to surprise me with a dog because I want to meet them first and make sure we would like each other. It takes some of the joy out of getting one to me, to not meet them/pick them out, buy all the toys, prepare, and learn how to be the best pawrent.
That's a pretty big hot dog but never too soon to plan for July 4th.

I got a 50 lb Aussie in a 650 sq ft apt! BUT. Dogs are not toys, they live for 10-15 years. That’s a pretty big commitment. You gotta factor that in if you and your partner like to travel, or if y’all stay out all day, or if you’re ready for the vet bills cause dogs are expensive.

^ no they don’t and I’d be an absolute monster without my pup.
Another vote here for securing your partner's commitment before getting a dog.
Do not ever surprise someone with a living creature. Ever.
You shouldn’t surprise anyone with such a commitment unless you’ve discussed it with them first.
If you did. Then absolutely. We rescued a. Beagle 5 years ago. She’s 30 pounds and perfectly happy in our 900sqft apartment. We do take her on at least 1 hour of walking per day
The fact that you want to surprise someone with an animal shows that you're not ready to take care of one. Please don't. Get a houseplant.
Definitely going to have to factor in exercise especially a small apartment like that.
If you and your partner are both consultants and work long hours and travel (in a post COVID world) then there’s a lot to consider in terms of housing/exercise/attention/etc.

My partner has been pushing me and ive always been the no person because weve lived apart. Shes in a Phd and is neurotic stress machine and I think the dog would be good for her mental health. Im looking at mini goldendoodles
Yes! This, A2!
