Mid-level lit associate at V100 firm thinking about going in house. Seeing lots of “product counsel” roles, especially at tech companies. How does that role differ from more traditional ACG/legal counsel roles? Is there a path for product counsels to advance within the organization?

Generally product counsel is a role encompassing more commercial contracting, privacy and sometimes regulatory aspects of a product/service. Traditional AGC/corporate counsel roles are generally more generalist handling corporate governance, transactions, regulatory, litigation, etc. Also, generally means just that. There is no one title that fits all. Corporations are unique and may use different titles for particular roles that don’t necessarily translate to the same type of work at a different company.

Thanks for the reply

I do products counseling at a tech firm. It’s a fairly generalist position. You’re basically the “line lawyer” for the business teams you suppor t. Your job is to spot legal issues and serve as the first line of defense on things that come up. If there’s a high risk privacy, antitrust, health and safety, IP issue that you don’t have expertise in yourself, you will typically raise to subject matter experts within the company. You’ll also be involved in litigation and regulatory inquiries that target the products/services you support. There are opportunities to advance, but that will depend on your specific org. Feel free to DM to get into more details.

Sounds awful

Any ideas that people have on how to network/break into circles of tech startups? Long story short, joined a tech Fortune 500 company a little over a year ago as an entry level analyst and things have gone downhill with COVID (limited growth here but got exposure). Looking to start new with a startup as I grew tired of the ethics of a larger corp. I have no network as it stands in tech startups, don't come from a target school (although I graduated with honors) and at a loss of where to start.

Over 20 plus years with this company my base pay has gone up every couple of years. The biggest growth in my salary has come as a "Bonus pd 1x/yr" which now is over 50% of my cash compensation. Base plus bonus plus benefits is on the Lower half of my industry Salary Value from talking to industry colleagues.

I may have an opportunity for a new position with another company starting around the first of the new year. My concern is that the "bonus" is not paid until March. What to do?

Any advice on negotiating for things other than salary with current employer? Most interested in a <40 hr work week (while still considered FTE), but also good to hear perspectives on negotiating for more PTO, benefits, 401k match, bonus, etc. How do I turn the conversation to this from annual raise discussion? Should I address with my line manager or HR? What are fair trade-offs for salary $s?
For context, annual reviews are coming up, but company has been clear budget for salary raises is low.
