Might seem like a silly question - however are solution engineers and implementation consultants similar? I do know the difference b/w the pre sales (SE) vs post sales (implementations). Look deeper

An ideal IC is a SME on a particular product and an ideal SE is a generalist who can build demos quickly and present them persuasively across multiple products. Often the same person is capable of both broad capability + targeted SME but the "hats" are very different. Generally, successful demonstration of both skillsets is what would make one a "solution architect".

I’d say they’re very different with different skills. SE’s role is there to help sell an idea to a customer and aren’t on the hook for the ultimate delivery. Consultants have to be held accountable for the end result.

SEs likely have a better ability to ‘solution’, i.e demonstrate the value of the product to senior stakeholders and their situation. The latter likely has a lead on being closer to the product itself, improvements, nuances, implementation on a lower level, and probably does not worry as much about sales-driven compensation. Just my two cents.

Implementation consultants also have to have a real understanding of the tool and technical expertise. Not to mention delivery methodologies. The SE role feels fluffy to me personally

Can confirm. Super fluffy on the tech side. You need to know how to sell to be good imo
