Why would anyone go to jones day

likefunny

More first hand experience. Seriously. Don’t work there.

I was in a specialty group that worked on a lot of finance stuff at JD. It was rarely their deals that had me up working at 1am.

Generally, JD is no better or worse for WLB than other law firms. Which means, it's pretty bad. Blackbox comp is also a downside, but I was always at market.

like

I work at JD in a transactional group. You will end up working as much as every other biglaw firm, so go to the firm that actually gives covid and other special bonuses. Not getting covid bonuses from JD is a joke.

like

That was the catalyst for my departure. No special bonuses when my friends' firms are making it rain? I was out once my annual pay increase was only 'market' without the covid bonuses. And then that came late after initially being on hold while all these bonus announcements were being made.

I wouldnt work in our NYC office. Undermarket pay for market work. I work at a non-major market and its fantastic. Best pay in region by far and highest quality work. Great coworkers and projects.

I'm in Pittsburgh but all of my friends (in non-nyc /dc offices) love their experience.

‘Milbank finance’ is ambiguous. They have a bunch of different finance groups (eg, Project Finance, LevFin, Direct Lending, T&S finance). Which group are you considering?

Hi OP,

I’m at Milbank in the Structured Finance Group. This group is about 80% CLOs and of that about 75% of the work is representing collateral managers. The other 20% is leveraged lending with a structured component (usually backed by pools of loans or other general intangibles).

Hours are bad. I bill about 275-300 a month. People are fine to work with. Not very social and pretty staid.

When I was junior I rotated through a few other groups in including Lev Fin and know people in other groups as well. I’d say that all finance practices at Milbank work all the time (hours are probably more comparable to a place like Latham or STB than MoFo or Allen and Overy).

Happy to discuss more if you’re interested.

Thinking of starting my own estate planning and real estate closing law firm. I have some experience in both. My concern is getting clients once I open the doors. I graduated in 2018 and have worked in a few different jobs since then. I am located about 45 min outside of Boston. Anyone open their own firm and see success right of the bat? What did you do to start getting clients in the door?

the main partner I work for hasn’t been giving me consistent enough work (or type I want) so while I work for him still on some deals, I’ve had to go and get other work from other partners. He doesn’t regularly check in on what I’m working on. He keeps volunteering me for projects without checking if I have capacity and if he expected to know everything I’m working on… he would’ve thought I was just doing nothing the last 2 months. Corp/securities associate and lateraled to a 40-50 attorney firm earlier this year. I’m a non traditional candidate and considered a 3rd or 4th year and make $200k base. Waiting on raise/bonus info but can’t help but wonder if I could be making $100k more at a larger firm and working similar hours. I put a premium on the people I work with and have gotten a good rhythm here as well as built up a good rep so far. For reference I have billed avg. 180-200 hrs a month. Any insights?

My partner lateraled as a senior associate (now a 7th year) and hasn't yet received clear direction on ascension to partnership. Curious what your firms have told you about pathways to partnership? Are you eligible to be made partner as a 9th year? What factors go into consideration? Are you expected to generate business before you achieve partner? How much?

Mid-level here. Has anyone gotten their firm to approve their doing work at a deep discount and, if so, what strategies did you use? A potential client approached me directly about a small matter (~20 to 30 hr amicus brief). The potential client (gov’t) pays a standard rate ~40% lower than mine, but I want to take on the project because it would be a good professional opportunity (e.g., high profile case & client) and of course the lower rate won’t affect my comp directly. 🤷‍♀️ All advice welcome!
