Millennials: do you picture yourselves at any company for long period of time for the rest of your professional career, or do you see yourself jumping place to place for the rest of your working lives

I'll jump and I'll stay. It depends on the situation, of course

like

The problem is, even if you love your place, when it comes to raises and promotions within it is not the same as hopping around. Staying would be more attractive if you got more than a cost of living raise and handshake.

like

I used to hop around, but I've finally found an agency that seems to actually give a shit - planning on staying here as long as I can.

like

Jumping until the price/culture is right and it's time to settle down 🙏 I don't think anyone stays at one place for their whole career nowadays

like

I hoped around five different agencies in my 3+ years and now I need to settle down...but at least I got a pay raise with each hop.

like

It depends on the f-cking company. Give me the leeway to learn with an output that'd help the agency (even if it involves me tiring myself out on things I really care about) or tell me to put my head down and I will do that until I'm poached. There are pretty much monthly opportunities to jump. We have student loans as well as a drive to always learn and improve.

like

I've been at my first agency for almost 4 and almost feel silly for it. I don't want to be blindly loyal if there's more money and opportunity out there. But, I will say, so far my loyalty has only been rewarded.

like

I'd like to hop around at this point but finding a mid level opening is like finding a four-leaf clover.

Xennial here (36). This question is too broad. This business is structured to move in general, but there are exceptions. You have to move to move up usually so if you have any measure of ambition the answer is to make some power moves when opportunities present. The basis of any career projection in adland is either be valuable to an agency, and therefore in theory any client, or be valuable to a client. Many of us have been both at one point. It comes down to what choice you make when its time to make one. Nobody (client or staff) stays with one agency for 30 years anymore. Id call this insanely rare. Business simply dictates. Client you worked on leaves and wants you to go to the new shop and the current agency also wants you to stay? That comes down to money and prospects. Nice problem. Millenials are going to choose the one that provides the most money and stability I would think. If the agency finds something else for you and you stay, bravo - they want you and see you impacting many possible clients. When the client leaves and niether the agency wants to keep you and the new agency is not interested, you are not percieved valuble or niche enough and need to up your game. If you can in this case, you immediatly go freelance of course. The other less common one is when just the client wants you and that means you have sold yourself to them, not bad but a reality. This is how I see it for todays mid level agency staff, most of which are millenials.

The industry forces you to jump around in order to make any type of pay or title increase before 28. Personally hoping to settle down with my next move. I don't think it's in millennial nature to jump around for the rest of our lives.

like

Millennials don't exist.

like

Also, managers don't mentor today in the way they used to...even 10 years ago. My managers have literally not taught me a thing since I joined and I view this as another reason why Millennials probably jump.

like

If I stay with advertising- then I will continue to jump. When I get a low ball promotion, I'm going to go somewhere where I'm valued in promotion title and pay.

like

Post came out awkward sounding due to editing. Darn character limit.

like

I love the idea of staying somewhere long-term, but not sure if that's realistic in this day and age.

like

@Senior Strategist 1 same for me at 3 years. I'm almost afraid to look though, I don't want to leave my agency because I'm happy here, plus I'd hate to see how much more $$ I could make elsewhere :/

like

I don't like hopping around (not a fan of change and like being loyal to one place) but unfortunately I'm not paid enough to stay a while and there's no hope for a legitimate raise to get the salary I should.

Whats classified as a long time. Two years at one company seems long to me.

I'd really like to be at only a couple of places for a long time, but I also understand the volatility and the need to build a large tool kit. For now I am content and I hope to stay that way for as long as possible, hopefully several years

RE has slowed down IMO. Still some work in multifamily and new construction/development (and workouts/restructurings/foreclosures), but hotels, office, retail not doing great at the moment for obvious reasons. Have heard of multiple layoffs, but not mass layoffs yet, and I don’t think we’re going to mass layoffs since this is clearly a temporary pandemic related issue.

Would love to hear from others on what they’re seeing in RE. Please share your geographic market/firm size/relevant info.

Generally curious how many companies offer phone reimbursement? My last gig did not but the current one does. Legally it seems, all employers are required to do so if we use our phone in literally any capacity (video call, slack, teams, emails etc). How prevalent is the issue of not reimbursing phone dues?

Currently halfway through my analyst stint. I really enjoy banking but am thinking about a JD. I went to a non-target undergrad but am fairly confident I can get into a top law school.

Would it be stupid to leave for 3 years to get a JD just to come back to banking? Would I be better off just going straight to associate despite non-target undergrad degree following me around?

We all love to hate on billable hours. What’s a real, feasible alternative???

Small agency owner 🙋🏻‍♂️ I’ve wracked my brain and have 3 biz model options, none great:

Billable hrs: Generally accepted. We all know the downsides.

Pay4performance: Big upside potential, tons of risks.

Project pricing: Cloak for billable hours. You have to estimate project cost with something.

Who’s thought of a better approach??? Genuinely curious if there is one.

Day 14 of being laid off.

I'm working on building healthier habits in the morning as a way to start my day in a better mindset. But it sucks that while i was on my morning outdoor workout i get an email saying that the interview i had a few days ago went nowhere at this in-house shop.

I was very excited about the opportunity. I guess i need further humbling down or at least manage my expectations better.

But this is just the beginning of a new day — and i wish you all a great one.
