Generally, people aren't very good at seeing the world from the perspective of people from a different culture.
Poor Americans struggle to understand what it means to be average, wealthy, or super wealthy. People born above the 50th percentile struggle to empathize with the bottom 10%.
Christians struggle to see the world from an agnostic viewpoint, and vice versa.
Empathy requires a lot of brain power that most people either choose not to use or do not possess.
People act in their own interest while minimising the plight of others. Even "bleeding heart libs" vote in their own interest to alleviate cognitive dissonance.

*Gasp* average people vote in their own self interest. Say it isn’t so!
Also, I never called anyone stupid. I think this has a lot to do with ignorance, and the fact that these dynamics are not straightforward, and the easy answer is not the right one. Ignorance is very different from stupidity, I’m an ignorant on very broad set of topics, but wouldn’t consider myself stupid. And I think the same applies to the majority of the population.
"At a certain point one would think we have to admit that there is simply a large swathe of the population, including a substantial fraction of non-white people, who do not buy into progressive intellectuals’ conception of what racism is." - Matthew Iglesias
"Support for far right populism has been falling like a rock over the last year in much of Europe. In part because in places like Denmark the left-liberal coalition has moved to the left on economic issues and to the center on polarizing social issues" - Lee Fang, the Intercept
The classic if you don’t vote democrat, you’re a racist card.
Has Joe Biden really never done anything racist?
So you’re telling me you’re mad you couldn’t guilt people into voting against their own interests? Maybe you should tell them what terrible people they are again. It might work this time.

Something about democracy, freedom, two wolves, and a sheep voting on lunch.
