McK1, I guess it all depends on how you define success vs failure so really important to understand what really matters to you. I made the move 10 years ago, now working with the brightest minds in this company on some of our biggest challenges. I changed job (but not company) 4 times and moved up the ladder twice in 10 years so not stuck but slow and not as natural ... and there is always this annoying moment when that great analyst you hired on your engagement while you were a manager 10 years ago gets promoted to Partner before you. Have to share that when I came back from maternity leave at the time my Partner said to me “so, now that you have 3 kids, you will stop working” ... that was not a question in his mouth ... 10 years later, I feel that being still around (while he is not...), being still married (while he is not) and seeing my kids every day almost (with solid meditation class and “au pair” back up) while being still super excited by a challenging job is pretty close to what I had defined as success at the time ... and I have this nice glass of wine handy in case analysts jump to Partner in the blink of an eye ...

Same. I’m tired of being away from my kiddos. But i hate that stepping away into something more local/internal feels like failure. Anyone else feel that way?

like

Yup... Seriously considering requesting a Europe transfer before baby #2 and taking advantage of being part of a more civilized society that actually recognizes a moms need to bond with her baby for more than, oh, a week... Germany is up to two years. Is there a better one?

Feel like I’m constantly apologizing for fitting my family into work life (when it should really be the other way around).

I completely agree OP. I might be stepping into a more internal and local role soon. I’d still be doing great stuff and really supporting people. But somehow raising my hand and saying “I want to stop traveling” feels like I’m personally failing. It’s definitely a pride issue and nothing else. Im not sure how to get over it though...

I'm an experienced hire new to D, new to consulting, new to the private sector - new to everything. When I was deciding if I could travel every week and miss most of the last few years I have with my 15 year old, I lamented, "I want to change careers so much, but I feel so guilty. It is so hard to fulfill all needs." My mentor said, "You can have it all, just maybe not all at once." So maybe you take a step back from traveling for a few years, hone marketable skills in the meantime, and come back to it when you feel you are ready. We're not superwomen. Balance is important, and part of success is feeling fulfilled and satisfied. When your life flashes before you, few people wished they had spent more time working. Kudos to you all with little ones!

completely agree McKinsey & Company 1. I got super guilty when I had to take off after Christmas break because my son had the flu. I mean I should really only care about him getting well.

Length of maternity leave is one part of the equation but the real question is once you get back, because whether your kid is 6 month old or 26 month old, being away 4 days a week is hard to handle. And, yes, being in Europe makes it easier as most projects are intra country, and if you pick wisely your hometown, it could even be intra city. That said, it doesn’t mean you get quality time with your kid every evening and morning. So back to the exam question : would I feel better moving away from a client facing position ... that is a very personal and tough one...

like

A1 that’s some really great perspective that I needed to hear. I still would be staying with my firm and still doing really cool challenging work and still being a client counselor, but in a totally different way. Definitely slower, but also so so much more sustainable. Part of me is worried I’ll get bored or that I will regret the change, but I think it is still (and maybe even more) in line with what I had originally always defined success as. So this is definitely good to think about

Accenture 1, that is the million dollar question. Sometimes I feel like (if were honest) making the decision almost hits our pride and feeling of independence more than or colleagues/clients.

I’m saying this exact thing in a few months once my project wraps. It is not worth it to me.

I moved to an internal role 2 years ago and feel so much better. I still get to work with some smart people, who are so much more incredibly understanding since they probably made this move for similar reasons as me. Thoughi still felt that twinge when my peers from consulting got promoted this year. A1 - I really hope I can see things in perspective as well as you when they go on to become partners. Thank you so much for sharing your experience

I can do in home or a center- but my nerves are holding me back, esp for my almost 1 year old.

Hey mommas - My baby is 14 weeks old and I haven't gotten my period back yet. I'm worried I'm pregnant again. When did you get your period back? For context, I'm breastfeeding but not exclusively (I am pumping and nursing as much as I can though). I've been on the pill since 6 weeks and my husband used condoms for the first few weeks once we started again. Surprisingly, I can't find anything online that's helpful. Any sense of a timeframe would be tremendously anxiety-reducing!

Any thoughts on ESPPs? I finished a final round with a startup who was acquired by a well known corporate company in late 2020. The startup used to offer stock but now employees can only buy stock through the parent’s ESPP at a 15% decrease of market rate (currently $300/share). Base would be $140K, 10% bonus. Do you think negotiating for more base because there’s no stock in TC would be a good idea? And any experience with ESPPs?
