If this is your first child, and you haven't been through this before -- don't box yourself in. I left thinking on maternity and was very vocal and truly thought hey - don't worry about me - I'll be back asap and working etc, and then they put that baby in my arms, and I didn't want to go back at all. I did but it was a really difficult return emotionally and I was heartbroken leaving my baby. I was fortunate to have family help out in the beginning, otherwise I think I would have chewed my arm off if it meant I could have stayed home. Those protective momma bear hormones are pretty strong when they kick in.

Interesting how different it is for everyone. This is not my first pregnancy, however, I did take the full leave right after I had my twins. I can’t say I particularly enjoyed being a sahm, so my return to work was actually very smooth. It also cured me of my pp depression

Please, please do not commit to returning to work early. Tell your team that you're currently planning to take full leave so they can plan for that. If you decide to come back early for your own benefit, they'll be more than happy to see you. There is no way to know for sure how a birth will go. Some people have smooth sailing with their first and complications with second. Some have the most colicky baby unexpectedly or other issues to deal with. Do NOT take on this burden in advance

Thank you - of course if something is wrong medically either with me or the babies, I won’t be returning early. But if everything is Ok, that’s definitely the goal. I have good support network at home - my husband is planning to take paternity leave (he has 16 weeks), and my mom will also be watching the kids.

I mean, you’ll likely still be bleeding pretty heavily at 2 weeks pp 😬 assuming everything goes perfectly according to plan

This will be my second maternity leave with EY. My first leave I had 2 weeks before birth STD, 8 weeks after birth STD (2 of those were unpaid), and then 10 weeks of EY parental leave. I guess, the only counted led 6 weeks STD after birth that were paid

STD is 6 weeks. That recovery is for the mother, and I don’t think you’re entitled to use it later. You may be thinking of paid family leave which is 12 weeks and can be used within the first year of birth for parental bonding.

like

EY1, yes, I am planning to ask her during my next appointment. I had a c-section with my twins and planning to have it this time as well. Last time recovery was very easy for me, so hope this time will be the same. I also work from home and not planning to go into the office at least for a few months after birth, so hope doctor will take it into consideration.

Part of me doubts that will be possible… actually most of me doubts that will be possible.

Cont: made it sound like no one goes off the STD earlier than 6 weeks postpartum

I was absolutely in no shape to try to work at 2 weeks PP. Is there a reason that you don’t want to take the 6 weeks? That is really the medical recovery time from birth.

My first baby was a saint, my second baby was colicky, had acid reflux, and had a type A personality even as a newborn 🤣. My 3rd and 4th babies were twins and taking care of both of them was easier than caring for my 2nd, I’m not even kidding. I’m hoping your experience isn’t the same as me. P.S. my second one is still very type A and difficult at 11 😂

My firm wouldn’t let me postpone it. My girls were in the NICU for a month and I wanted to work while they were there so I would have the time when they got home but they said you can’t postpone disability leave bc it’s really given to you to heal. If it’s leave for bonding with child, then you should be able to but I think you would still lose out on those 6 weeks. I got 8 weeks for c section. Then another 12 weeks Fmla for care of relative- bonding with newborn.

Thank you for sharing! Interesting, from what I understood, if my doctor seems me fit to return to work and go off the STD after 2 weeks, then I’ll still be able to take 14 remaining weeks later (not as STD, but as parental leave through my firm)

I think you can break up your leave for the part the firm covers but I don't think you can break up the STD part because it's a single insurance claim. Meaning I think you have to use the entire 6 weeks STD and then have more flexibility with the remaining 10 weeks covered by the firm, but I'm not 100% since I don't understand all the intricacies of insurance.

like

Now that I read this again I think what they meant to say is you have protected leave for a total of 16 weeks but they don’t necessarily pay you the same way for the STD portion if you decide to take those weeks later

I think the issue you will run into is the STD is for recovery immediately after the birth so it is paid for 6-8 weeks. Sure you could come back sooner but you can’t take it later and get paid. Parental leave on the other hand can typically be taken anytime during the first year after birth.

like

That’s the thing - I know I can’t take STD later, but from what the leave team told me, whatever portion of 16 total weeks is left after STD, I am still entitled to it. So technically if STD is 2 weeks, I’ll still have 14 weeks as EY parental leave. Another question is - will they be willing to get me off the STD so quickly

On my first I wanted to split my leave half now, half later, all taken in the first year and it was strongly discouraged. Maybe I could have pushed harder, but I just took it in one go instead.

Yeah, when I asked a question, they seemed fine with me taking one portion now, and another one later, however, she seemed pretty certain that the STD portion could be no less than 6 weeks

like

My understanding is that you can return early after 2 weeks, but the remaining 4 weeks of STD is lost. The 10 weeks can be used any time within a year.

Thanks, I will have to double check with them closer to the time of my leave. The person told me that if I take only 2 weeks, the rest 14 would still be available to me.

If you use straight purée, the sugar/carbs from about 1/4 to 1/3 of a can are minimal for the return on taste. Happy Fall Y’all! Enjoy.

I just found out I’m pregnant this morning. I have an offer for an in-house job which I’m thinking about to accept but they only provide 10 weeks maternity leave. My current firm offers 18 weeks. Should I stay for the maternity leave? I’m doing great in my current firm and received positive feedback in the performance review last week. But I know I’m going to move in-house eventually so I’m worried if I miss this opportunity it may not be easy for me to land another job.
