Moms of more than one kid: have you been able to continue your career with the same trajectory as other women who are not moms? Am very worried about essentially falling off of the map completely. Tips?

My honest opinion is it just depends on A) how much help you can afford and B) what you’re willing to miss. If you have a housekeeper, a full time nanny, etc...you can dedicate a lot of time to work. If you’re willing to be gone a lot and miss certain things, you can work a lot. It gets tricky for me when I HAVE to leave/be offline at a certain time for daycare pick up. Or stay home with a sick baby. Or not want to travel because I don’t want to miss time with my kiddos. I do still think I’m successful, but my trajectory is not as aggressive as it could be.

I think having the same trajectory as men / women with no children (assuming all other factors are held constant) is unlikely. There are tradeoffs - hours at work vs hours with your child(ren). That said it's doesn't have to equate to falling off the map. I got a significant pay bump, promotion, fewer hours by moving out of consulting ( recently). Could I have pitched for something bigger / better ..sure that's always the case but this option optimizes for my overall happiness (driven by family and career and SLEEP)

Is it significantly easier if you just have one kid?

Yes

No. I have other priorities than those with no kids. I have less energy and time. I am very efficient at my job and can do a good job, but I can’t hold a flame to someone with no kids, more sleep that is also efficient at their job. And that’s fine.

I think if you still stay motivated and career focused, then it shouldn’t impact your trajectory. For me, my priorities changed and I stopped wanting to travel as much because the home front was too stressful to manage remotely - my SO had a demanding job as well, so I had to come home early whenever there were emergencies (baby sick, sent home from daycare, etc) so I turned down a lot of roles that were probably better for my career development.

My MIL has made remarks to my husband that she doesn’t understand why we need a nanny for our infant since I am able to WFH (I’m a biglaw associate). She also doesn’t get why we have a cleaner and dog walker and seems to imply we’re wasting our money by outsourcing funds on things we can do. She was a SAHM so I guess I understand why she feels that way, but how do I explain to her why these things are necessary? I actually love my MIL but this is driving me nuts.

There’s an important meeting in two weeks and every one is planning to be in person. With three unvaccinated kids at home, I feel unsafe to be in a room full of maskless people who are making very different lifestyle choices (going out etc) than I am. My older kid wears masks all day in school and social distances - I feel guilty putting her at risk but also have major FOMO to skip the in person. With life returning back, this is going to be the first of many such situat. What would you do?

Happy holidays! What kind of craziness is everyone putting up with this year? I’ll start — my MIL told me my daughter scowls too much and that she needs “baby Botox”, and my sister just announced that she’s bringing the husband she’s been separated from (and that no one has spoken to) for 2yrs. Can’t wait! 😅

Left a tray full of Halloween candy outside. Within 10 minutes, who I'm assuming is, a teenage kid took every single one :( So much for the Halloween spirit. I sincerely apologize to any kid who had to pick between hot Funyuns and popcorn.
