Moms this one is a head scratcher...39 weeks pregnant and have already cleared 3 round of tough interviews with a tech firm. Recruiter was aware of this from day 1 and really tried to speed things con

OP you're too considerate. It's really not "special" treatment. That would be if you wanted to move the date because you had a party to go to the night before. This is a valid reason for making an adjustment so don't feel bad about asking for it. Honestly sometimes it seems like we're constantly apologizing for or hiding pregnancies and family commitments so we don't seem weak. I had a senior manager at a bank take a week off for getting a bug bite raking leaves in his backyard (seriously!?)... So don't be so hard on yourself and don't jeopardize you and/or your baby's health for the sake of strangers. Or anyone. Sorry this became a bit of a rant, but women and moms especially are just so nice sometimes and it gets taken advantage of! Be flexible but don't be afraid to ask for what you need. And if they can't give you that, you're better off elsewhere. Tech companies are a dime a dozen :)

like

Can you ask them do to the final round virtually for you? You've already met them multiple times in person. That way you can just do it whenever and can be comfortably seated on a well cushioned couch. If they can't do a basic Skype for Business then I question how good a tech firm they actually are lol Also if they're unwilling to be flexible knowing your circumstances and due date, to me that's a cultural issue as well. Not sure I'd want to work for a firm that lacks basic empathy for its employees.

like

Honestly, it raises some questions to me that they aren’t able to be more flexible. Asking to have the interview a bit earlier seems totally reasonable, particularly to accommodate someone who is going to have a baby any minute. Do you know anything about the culture at the company for working moms? Not trying to be a downer, but it’s something you should consider

like

Thanks ladies !! Baby came in yesterday... and I reached out to them today ... will be interviewing virtually next week !!

like

I’d push to see if they can do the interview now or ASAP. The closer you get to your due date, the less certainty and more stressful it will likely be and if you’re shooting for the week after your due date, you don’t know what shape you’ll be in. Having a days old baby turns your life upside down (both physically and mentally), let alone if you wind up having a c-section or tearing

like

Ask for flexibility that week. I would actually try for Monday. If it’s your first baby, you could very well be late. I would highly doubt you’d be up for an interview Friday if you had your baby on Wednesday. What if there are complications with you or the baby (very much hoping this isn’t the case)? I’d try for Monday. If you’ve had the baby already, maybe you’d be up for it Friday. If not, you may miss out. Your beautiful new baby will take your mind off of the missed opportunity- guaranteed Good luck!!!! Sounds like you’re already a super mom!

Thanks so much D1 Mama! I think we mean the same thing ... for perspective due date is on the 15 and the interview week is 16-20... I was going to ask for the 20. This is my second one... only risk is if baby is late.

helpful

Ah I see! It is a head scratcher. Just hope the little one is timely or really late, which will make you miserable I’m sure. 4/20 is a good day tho, lol. It’s my bday. I’ll think of you then and hope all went as you would have liked

like

I’d vote for earlier also. Depending on when you go into labor and the type of birth you’ll be in the hospital a minimum of 2-3 days after which would eat into the timeframe

like

I vote earlier too and am side eyeing the recruiter on this one. They should work to get you in asap. If I were interviewing someone and found out that they have baby a few days prior I would feel really uncomfortable and bad.

like

Thanks C1 Mama !!!😀 I honestly was naive enough to think they would wait for me to come Back in 6 weeks 😂😂😂

like

You might also want to consider when they would want you to start. I just had my second child and now I'm changing companies to wfh. Babies change everything.

like

Whoa! Congrats!

Congratulations! On the baby and the interview!

Congrats OP! So happy everything worked out

Cont. they want me to come in for the final one the Week of - after my due date( they asked me to tell them which days work M-F). I asked if I can push back one week later and they said that they didn’t want the other candidates to wait on my behalf. This is fair enough...but I would hate to miss out. Do you think I can ask for the Friday date ? Only problem is if the baby is late ...

Earlier was not an option :(

They only have that one week for interviews ... I either do it then or risk not being considered with other candidates. It is possible that they won’t like the candidates and may come back to me but having done 3 rounds already I just don’t want to give up now !! Also, I feel like I am missing out just because they have a one week window...

I have requested for a virtual meeting and I think that is doable ... given we had done one before. I don’t know what to make of the flexibility C1... on one hand I don’t want any special treatment but on the other ... what if I was not pregnant and had travel scheduled ? Wondering if they would have said the same thing .... it’s all so sensitive and weird. Lastly, the only person who knows about my pregnancy is the recruiter...if I am a no show for the interviews I would hate for the team to think I blew them off because of a frivolous reason.

D2 the only person I shared this info with was the recruiter... didn’t feel that anyone else needed to know and to her credit she tried to speed things up for the last 3 rounds. It’s unfortunate timing that the team is only available that week 😳and the other candidates as well. Not too sure about the culture for working moms ...definitely something to think about . I want to say it’s just tricky timing and then trying to be fair to all candidates.
