Moms, upon returning from your maternity leave, how do you ensure that you are up to speed on everything that you may have missed out at work during your leave? Management Consulting is all about different approaches and methodologies etc. How do you ensure that you don’t forget what you knew before you left?

You’d be surprised how little things change in a few months. I hopped back in like I never left. It was harder to remember all my log ins and excel shortcuts than it was to remember my actual job

In my first week back, I set up some 1-1s with people across all the areas that I am involved in (e.g. practice development, local office initiatives, etc.), my mentors, and also time with my colleagues that I know have a pulse on what is going on. I wasn’t concerned about forgetting things. I have had two mat leaves and upon both returns I found some things had barely changed, and others had changed a bit but it wasn’t anything that I couldn’t quickly adjust to when I got back. I was most recently out from end of Feb 2020 through early Aug 2020, so lots of change there due to shift to remote environment, Teams, changes within my practice, etc. But it all worked out.

I deleted most emails and “started over.” I set up one on ones to hear about the big items I missed for context and focused on the future. I definitely felt like a deer in headlights the first week...good luck!

I did literally zero prep. I started on all new projects when I returned, and there is always a little learning curve at the start of a project. It didn’t feel any different from what I usually do

Last week I had a miscarriage after being 8 weeks pregnant. I’m having a hard time focusing and coming up with ideas while my head is filled with emotions and my hormones are all out of wack. Have any of you gone through this? Did you tell your boss or anyone at work?

I’m thinking about leaving my government job for a matrimonial law firm. I had a baby in January & my husband’s job was hit particularly hard by the pandemic (100% commission based & I was already earning more than him). I am enticed by the compensation & have been unhappy with certain aspects of my govt job lately. But I’m also nervous about billables & firm life (I was a matrimonial lawyer 5+ years ago). Mostly I want to provide for my baby girl & not be stressed financially. Advice? Thoughts?
