If my manager was like @M1 I would call my manager, tell them I’m not feeling well, but that I will try to make it out tomorrow. I’d also tell them my airline was able to reschedule me for free due to my status so there won’t be extra expenses. If my manager was a normal human being, I’d call them and truthfully explain the situation and tell them I don’t have any important meetings today and this shouldn’t affect the client at all. Make sure they were cool with it.
No
As an engagement manager I personally would not do it because of my responsibilities to my clients. However , I would show understanding if one of my consultants would be straight with me and even cover up for them, as long as there are no critical meetings that day.
Let's be honest, most of our work can be done remotely thanks to the miracles of video conferencing and file sharing technology.
As engagement managers we have very few carrots to give our assigned reports, so why not use the opportunity when we have one?
Good attitude
The client is not paying for you to take vouchers and show up whenever you want. It’s not your money, and you are being paid to show up with your team. Leave the voucher for someone who actually has the flexibility.
I never said to lie or profit, just saying they don't pay for me or anyone really to be there in person. Dozens of clients and all embrace flexible work arrangements. All top tech firms and banks and bio tech firms. Get with the times.
Take the Monday flight. Thursday going home you do you.
I can’t believe this is even a question. It’s your job to get there on time. Why mess around or lie for $1000?? If I heard someone on my teams did this I would seriously question their commitment.
MDs need to relax a bit and get down from their high horses. If there is a limited set of meetings on Monday, and a consultant gets 1K and is a happier person, I am all for it. Especially, if a consultant is a high flier, then would definitely want to keep them. Think of it as a free incentive, where you are giving away maybe 6 hours of client site presence at max. Plus, its not like every week same consultant is going to get 1K incentive.
Everybody is all: “lie”
Just so you know... I don’t really give a shit
Yeah I’m in shock on this thread. If you would ditch a day of on site work for $1000 in airline credits and potentially lie about it, what else would you do because you “aren’t paid enough?” I get that you want to be scrappy and creative to maximize your income, but this is not the way to do it. Honesty and commitment will get you much further in life than the immediate gratification of a couple free flights
I get your point C2, but it's also a matter of honesty. If someone from my team was transparent about it, I would definitely try to make it work for that person. Lying would get the opposite result. If someone wants trust and respect, that person needs to offer the same in return.
To those advocating honesty: our firms teach companies how to put people out of work by outsourcing and automating jobs. How to pay as few taxes as possible. How to lay off people when buying up other companies. How to manage wars that kill innocent people. Who’s pressed about lying to these firms about a flight voucher? Not me.
Oh and don’t @ me with that “well if you don’t like it go work somewhere else” nonsense. Beside the point.
Yeah, hours taste like shit
Depends on travel flexibility. I usually try and get the cash unless I have to be somewhere.
Do NOT do this.....
DO THIS
Depends if that means you stay till Friday. I would take the voucher
Call and tell them my flight got cancelled and I’ll be there Tuesday. :) Why is this even a question?
^A6 watch your blindspot there, assuming everyone’s clients are male
Put yourself in the shoes of the client and imagine your reaction to a consultant doing this
@A2, If you’re fine with it, then you’re fine with it. If you’re not, then you’re not. Any reason for the ty next?
If you worked for me I would fire you for considering being dishonest. You are paid to meet client expectations. Considering lying for any reason makes me question your integrity
I’ve had this offer multiple times. Never took it. If it was today I’d take it in a heartbeat
I’ve had this happen twice where they offered $1K, both were on Day 1 of new projects so I reluctantly passed and took the flights. :/ if you have the opportunity and you don’t have anything critical to be in-person that day, do it...that’s a few days worth of work for most of us!
I don’t get the political nightmare here. Call your manager or team lead. if you don’t have any big meetings and the team is aligned, get in on Tuesday. If anyone have a brief moment of anxiety, don’t do it, get to work and forget the voucher, that way you won’t have to deal with MD1 here forever
Call in sick with “food poisoning"
Food poisoning for a week? 😩😂😂😂🤣
Will depend on your schedule for the day. if you can complete all your task for the day remote then sure go for it.
Call in sick. Straight up
