More than doubled my salary (90k to 190k) in 3 years by making 2 job changes. My biggest advice will be - Be ready to jump when an opportunity comes knocking. Don’t despair. If you work hard, you deserve to be compensated for it. No excuses.

I had a similar trajectory early in my career about 20 years ago: $35k doing staff aug at a no name T0 IT shop in LCOL, transferred to another city for a promo with the same company, which got me to ~$75k, then 3.5 years later jumped for a boutique at $115k. Haven't made any career moves that have had that large of a percentage increase since then, though total dollar amounts have been higher a couple times.

I completely agree with this. Five years ago I was making less than half of what I make now. Two job changes with each having very significant pay increases. Never would’ve gotten to where I am now without taking those leaps.

Same but not as quickly and 100% agree. Started at 60k, moved to Deloitte for 110k 3 years later, and now in the 250 range 4 years later at 6.5 years of experience. Life rewards people willing to take risks.

Which skill set?

December 2018 I was making 91k at PwC January 2019 switched to Accenture Strategy making 140k December 2020 promoted making 173k February 2021 offered role at EYP making 200k Just over 2 years and increased my base by over 100k

Honestly? My skill set is I'm good at bluffing my way to seem competent. Works in interviews and gives off a strong client presence

Sigh seeing posts like this makes me hopeful yet hard on myself. I often feel like I have imposter syndrome and don’t have the skills since I’m not technical to be worthy of jumping to another firm that would offer so much more. Any insight on how to help with this? How were y’all able to negotiate or find these positions?

Management Consulting?

Is it worth it to wait for a promotion then jump?

Not required but helps. I’ve seen several folks leave after being promoted which makes me think it’s a common strategy.

Jumps stop working after M level. People will start wondering why you can't get promoted internally. I have reservations on people jumping too often as it makes me believe they will dump us anytime as well... And yes I have interviewed several people from M level and below.

People leave because they can’t get promoted.

Need opinions: lender services vs a lower MM M&A IB (deal value 60m to 200m/ebitda generally up to 25m) role. I’ve been wanting to pivot to finance for a while now but not sure if going the LMM route sets me up better than just staying in TAS and waiting for a role in ABS/private credit. Short term comp is less of a concern for me since I’m thinking of this LMM IB as a stepping stone move.
