Morning all, can anyone tell me what it’s like working as in house counsel living Seattle or Portland? Thinking of applying to opportunities out west. Thanks!

Unlikely to get hired here unless you're from here or have significant ties, especially in Portland.

Completely untrue. I’ve heard many success stories (in house) applying cold turkey from across the country.

like

I started my career in Seattle & I’d agree with Attorney 1. It’s definitely not impossible, but the PNW tends to be pretty insular. Law firms & companies in the PNW are sensitive to how transient Seattle and Portland have become. They want to hire someone who will stay long-term - not someone who will come to Seattle for a few years and then move back home - so they tend to favor people with ties. That said, I didn’t have true ties to Seattle and was able to get a job - I just networked a ton and prepared a strong “why Seattle” answer.

That said, the focus on the above varies by industry. Big tech seems to care way less about that, if you have the right skill-set.

Feel free to DM me if you have specific PNW questions!

Of course! Also, to your other questions, I LOVED living in the PNW. I moved home a year ago for family reasons and I miss Seattle constantly. People complain about the weather a lot, but I loved it. Seattle has perfect summers and while it does rain in the winter, it’s more of a perpetual drizzle than true “rain”. The biggest con for both Seattle and Portland is the cost of living. It’s crazy expensive & getting worse.

like

I have a law school classmate that was able to work for a sports team with no ties to Seattle. So not sure it’s a blanket fact but appreciate the opinion.

Also, I asked what is it like? Weather, networking, dating etc. thanks!

I know you asked what it's like but it's a moot point if you can't get your foot in the door.

It rains a lot and is a tough place to date to be honest compared to the east coast, etc. Decent cost of living compared to SF or NY, but Seattle isn't as affordable as it used to be.

I think the PNW market is insular because folks have been burned by attorneys moving here and working for a year or two and then leaving due to crime, lack of sunshine, the homeless problem, etc.

Big tech will hire you in Seattle and doesn’t care if you’re from there.

I am a 7 year litigation associate and so burnt out on it. I want to transition to in house, but have applying and not getting traction. My experience is mostly insurance defense/coverage, and most of the positions out there seem to be for tech or transactional work. I also come from smaller firms and a smaller school, so no big names behind me. All the recruiters I’ve talked to will only peg me as an insurance defense associate and won’t send me anything else. How do I get out of litigation?

I got a job in-house 6 months after working at a law firm. I really love the work I’m doing (a little bit of everything) but am not getting the mentorship and training I should be getting. Do you think I should try to get a job at a law firm and then try to go back in-house in 2-3 years? Or just try to switch companies to get better mentorship?
