Morning Women in Tech!

I’ve seen a lot of posts surrounding burn-out. I personally had time off work (6 months+) for corporate and personal burn-out and I know how devastating it can be to go through.

Post below the ways in which you ensure you check in and take care of yourself to avoid burning out. Not all of these will be accessible for everyone, but maybe we can find support in each other.

I work remote, so when I am feeling really stressed I go outside and pull weeds, trim edges, deadhead flowers, etc. Gardening is like therapy for me so it really helps. That and I write pissed off email responses (in a word doc) and then delete it.

I agree 100% about the email.
It is incredibly therapeutic to get all the negative thoughts on paper and then get rid of them with a simple delete.

Taking time off is a self care necessity. seriously! I’m lucky that my company offers unlimited PTO, but when I started there a year ago I still had a scarcity mindset surrounding it. I’d only take time when it was absolutely necessary. Now I see the value in deliberately taking a planned reset/mental health day after completing a big project or task, even if I don’t have a trip planned or family obligation to attend. I also learned to delegate efficiently so that the bulk of my workload isn’t constantly squeezing every last drop of energy out of me, but rather it’s equally distributed amongst my team based on their personal talents and skill set. That way when I do take time off, the world doesn’t seemingly cave in, everybody gets to step up into self leadership for a day or a few days, and they can own their workload and deadlines which builds trust when I return. Modeling what it looks like to prep myself and the team before I take time away empowers my team to take time for themselves when they need it, too, so they’re not feeling burnt out and resentful and we’re all more productive throughout the year. Ripple effect!

Ooof I completely relate to not taking enough PTO. I was constantly selling/losing holiday days at my old job as I was terrified of using them. Now I treasure booking random days off to sit and read a book or just lie still (what ever is needed to recharge!).

like

I block out time in my calendar to unplug, either I get my full hour all at once or I get micro-breaks of 20 minutes to go outside for a walk, grab something to eat or drink, read a book, or sketch. I also schedule bi-weekly wellness appointments to keep body and mind in check. If you have a manager who has a habit of contacting you outside of business hours or while on PTO, set an out of office message that makes it clear what level of accessibility there is to you. Same with text messages where you can silence your notifications. I also will let my manager know hard stops on any day where I cannot work early or late. There are rare occasions I will make exceptions, particularly when the CEO or anyone in the C-Suite needs something.

likesmart

Mind you, setting boundaries can be uncomfortable. There will be colleagues who will give you a hard time for working remotely, taking all your PTO, or taking time to attend to wellness but the truth of the matter is that you can’t be firing on all cylinders all the time in all areas of your life. The people giving 110% at work don’t have much energy left to give in other aspects of their lives and that is extremely evident. It’s not a sprint to the top of the ladder, it’s a marathon! Cruise at around 85-90% effort so that when you really need to double down, you have bandwidth and energy to do so!

like

Boundaries were a way I began to manage my burnout. Setting times for a break and lunch to get away. Also setting times to read emails so the inbox was not so overwhelming. In addition I would read meeting requests and if there was no agenda, I would request a purpose or send a proxy if one was not received. I also stuck to my core hours to ensure I was not extending past for everyone's emergency. It became helpful in managing my levels.

Exercise!! Anything from short 10min walks to running and lifting. Take time to go outside (even in the rain), enjoy the fresh air, and let your body exert itself for a little bit.

I work for Lyra Health and as employees we also have access to mental health! I have a coach that I saw when life started becoming overwhelming! She was amazing! Listened, gave thoughtful insight and I even learned some tips on stress management (because I had 0 previously). Check out your company's EAP program and see what they offer! Usually it's low cost or even no cost!

I’m feeling down. 😢 After 3 failed IVFs with the last one ending in a chemical pregnancy I sought the opinion of a second fertility doctor. She said given my age of 45, my husband and I had the same chances of getting pregnant with another round of IVF with my own eggs as I would naturally and wouldn’t move forward with IVF, only with egg donor. My AMH is 2.6 and FSH was 7.4 just this past month. Should I ignore her and seek a third opinion? Not quite ready to go down the egg donor route yet.

How much should I charge a friend to watch 4 dogs at their home over Christmas weekend (2 nights)? The dogs don't have any special needs or medications. Would $40 per day/night be reasonable?

Hi guys. I have 2 tax senior offers one from EY and one from a top 20 midsize firm but they’re in 2 diff lines of tax. The EY one is for 1120/ASC740 work and the midsize is for HNWI/trust/estate PCS work. I’ve never done Corp compliance before but I do have 1040/1120S/1065 experience. Do you guys have any advice? What to expect, what kind of exit opportunities there are, etc ? I know the midsize has better WLB as well

I’ve noticed that I am finding it hard to leave work “at work” and also not detaching myself emotionally from work. For example, if I send out a contract and it’s heavily marked up, I see red (no pun intended). Ill also think about it non stop until I provide my response (which is not good in am angered state. I’ve tried the standard coping mechanisms (count to 10, workout, etc.), but doesn’t help. Is this burnout? Any tips here?

Recommendations for firms to look into in South FL? I'm in Ft. Lauderdale but am open to Boca or Miami. I'm a first year associate in ID (coverage issues) but really would prefer transactional work. More importantly though, I'm looking for companies who pay relatively well (doesn't necessarily have to be market), are open to remote/hybrid work, aren't sweatshops. I'd settle for insurance work if theres good WLB & $$$ lol

This would be my 3rd, but need some input. I am 10 dpo (guess) and I just wiped some reddish brown discharge. It’s like mucus/veiny consistency. I have had cramping pain yesterday and today. I’ve never had implantation bleeding, but could this be that? Baby dust please. It’s been a 4 month journey up until now from getting off the minipill and no positive or af…this is the first sign of anything.
