Do most people have a reason to know as agency names? Tech firms (I’m assuming you mean ones like Apple, Google and Uber) provide services directly to most people, as do banks. I’m not sure you could actually get random people on the street to name Deloitte or McKinsey.
Because no one outside of advertising cares about advertising. Most people hate ads and do what they can to avoid them. You only come into this orbit if you work here
Or are we just living in an irrelevant bubble? Randomly thought about this today and how it might contribute to the diversity problem in agencies

People have heard of us but mainly because we’ve been around so long. It is nice tho when people say, where do you work? And they’ve heard of it
The cobbler’s children have no shoes, and all that. We make ads for clients, not ourselves. People used to know an acronym agency I worked at because it had been around forever and was on Mad Men. We aren’t public-facing.
DD1 good point. Tech and financial companies offer services to those individuals, which is why they have name recognition. Companies have a use for an ad campaign, but people don't.
After Mad Men came out people recognized the name of my agency. But not because it was any less inconsequential...
