Project Management

Mother and 72andSunny have started PM departments. Recruiter from Mother said that PMs would report into the Creative Resource manager! 72 said they would report into production 🤦🏽‍♂️. Why!!!!???

That’s an indicator of how well the PM department will fare at both agencies. Spoiler alert: not well.

Exactly. The PM department needs a leader (Director) to maintain their autonomy as a department, define processes and establishes R&Rs. Otherwise, I’ve seen instances where the Project Managers are just an extension of the department they’re folded into.

Sounds like they aren’t willing to invest in the discipline enough for a leader to run the department the way it should be run. At least not yet.

Forgive my potential ignorance but curious as to who you think they should report to? Another existing person in the agency or are you saying the should report within their own department and create a program director position (or something along those lines)?

Creative Operations Director could also work. Theoretically that role should run Studio, PM, and Producers

Completely makes sense... who would the director of PM report into in your ideal situation? President/CEO or is there another layer of delivery or operations? I’ve never truly been part of what I think is a good PM department so very curious as to how others think it should be.

Keep in mind that a lot of resource managers and producers were once PMs...so I'd go forward with the interview and meet the resource manager/producer. Also I've worked at an agency where the PMs reported to a resource manager and it hummed along. The process was solid.

Most RMs were not PMs or producers. They started as creative coordinators & grew into the role and advanced.

I also spoke with Mother and felt like they didn’t quite understand the role. They told me they’re only interested in hiring junior/mid level people which definitely worried me.
