Mother has a decent nest egg ($3M) and lives in an extremely LCOL area. Currently manages money through RBC, however the fees are a gross operating expense of 0.36%. What do you all recommend? I’m not savvy enough to manage it myself however I know that fees can stack up and kill returns. Would appreciate any insight/advice/snark.

This is active management for 0.36%? Tbh that’s pretty good. If neither her nor you are able to manage it yourself you could probably keep it there

like

Ya this is fine

0.36% for active management is very reasonable. There are plenty of index and mutual funds 1% or higher

No problem at all. Best of luck.

Why not just throw it all in an index fund?

Retirement is 2-5 years away so there’s some level of bond allocation etc that needs to be accounted for. Honestly have never really looked into properly allocations/funds etc.

That’s dirt cheap. That’s a lot of money to be messing with if she needs it right around the corner.

Wife is a financial advisor and <$5M she charges .75-1%.

Always been a fan of FIRE and reading about it has definitely helped my finances but I can’t help but wonder if the movement is more about lifestyle change than early retirement.

After you achieve FI,you basically have to maintain the lifestyle that got you there.

What if you want to go on a lavish vacation or buy that flatscreen TV? Are you supposed to do away with material goods entirely? I suppose you could keep working for discretionary $ and live off interest but then you’re not retired.

Current mortgage at my old place is ~$3.5k all including principal/interest + escrow (insurance, property tax etc) with a 2.875% interest rate. Never been a landlord before and obviously not a great time to be selling so curious how much would I need to get in rent in order to make it worth it to me and not losing $$$?

Hi tax 🐠,

I have a question for those who prep individual tax returns. My parents claim my grandfather as a dependent on their tax return and due to their low income, receive PTC for the premiums they pay on his insurance (not eligible for medicare). However, would it be advantageous to have him file for his own tax return (he stays with my parents and doesn't have his own proof of residency via bills). If so, can he get PTC if his income is 0?

Any good detox diets that good to try out and not horrroble for your body? I want to curb some sugar cravings and bad eating habits over the past year. Has anyone done one they liked? I was thinking of starting a 3 day detox then go into 7days of a white meat/fruit cleanse for a week. Then just stop eating like a complete child on holiday after those are done 😅 any advice on what helped you get past the cravings and level set would be helpful! I received a job offer for a PM position with a base of $125K and a 10% bonus, fully remote and ok benefits. The parental leave is pretty bad, just FMLA and STD/LTD so the most I’d get is 60% of my salary for 12 weeks. I’ve cancelled most of my interviews except for one where the pay is $135K, 20% bonus, hybrid schedule, good benefits and 16 weeks fully paid parental leave. I’d like to start my family in a year or two - is it better to take the remote gig or the hybrid role with full paid leave?

I run marathons but I’ve been doing that for years now and it’s never impacted my period prior. I have an appointment to see my OB in a week but wondering if any of you experienced this.

For about 7 years I've split my contributions approximately 50/50 between a traditional 401(k) and Roth 401(k) to get some tax diversification. My annual contribution has been the annual max, plus a small employer match (3%) into my traditional acct.

I'm switching jobs and am reconsidering my approach. Would it make more sense to max out the traditional 401(k) and use the present day tax savings to fund a Roth IRA, assuming I'm able to with income limits/backdoor conversions?

For those of you that have very large bonuses / equity grants compared to your base pay- how do you allocate reoccurring paychecks compared to your lump sum payments?

I recently joined this club- my base pay stayed consistent at 120k. My TC went from 150k to 250-300k.

One thing I can think of is maxing my 401k during the year than spreading that bonus out to cover the delta.

What else? This is a whole new world for me.

Serious question - is there a reverse FIRE strategy? I like the idea of saving and retiring early, but the one hiccup I see (and sorry if this is grim) is if you die earlier than expected. I’d be worried that I would minimize lifestyle and fun for retirement at 50 but I’d die at 49. How about a way to work 9 months out of the year and retire/travel/relax for 3 months? This way you guaranteed your dreams/etc. are fulfilled
