Tell hospital you have no insurance. You’ll be shocked to see how low the no insurance amount will be

Why would you ever get aging parents here without insurance, penny wise pound foolish

I genuinely don’t mean to diss OP but I’ve seen a few other cases where the parent was critical and the person had to do really shady things and get them back to india, it saddens me to think people would not realise how big a deal not getting insurance is

I would get in touch with the financial team at the hospital. They’ll charge you self pay rates. They can also give you discounts based on total assets etc. Depending on how long she spent in the ED, you will have to pay at least 1K+ for the ambulance, 300 to 500 for ED department and 300-500 for the physician’s bill not including any medications etc. If she had a procedure, it’s going to over and above this.

In this case, hospital will give you bill right away. If you took ambulance service then bill might > $6000k. I had a similar situationand had to pay close to that amount for ambulance serive and ER visit. In my case it was a false alarm and we were out of ER in 3 hrs.

Maybe just don’t pay the bill though. In many cases the hospital will have no recourse since your MIL has no assets

They will ask for either your ID or your MIL’ passport before releasing her. Not paying is not an option. Sooner or later u will have to pay.

Have an honest conversation with the finance group at the hospital- they usually have different rates and payment options for non-insured patients
