Moving from Vancouver to Seattle area. Any recos for neighbourhoods with not so overpriced rent? Have a car and used to driving in and out of downtown core when needed. Looking for safer communities. Any tips? Thanks!

I’m in north beacon hill. I find it to be nice. It’s just south east of downtown so proximity to the airport is ideal if that is important to you.

Same

If it’s possible, stay in an Airbnb / vrbo for a month in a neighborhood you like. I did this when I moved out of Seattle and was able to see which areas I liked and didn’t in the new city before committing to a lease.

Sorry I can’t recommend buildings!

West Seattle… if you are okay with some grittyness white center is really a nice community

like

Still safer than most other US cities violent crime wise

Beacon hill and Tukwila

We moved to central beacon hill last year and absolutely love it.

West Seattle! Alki, North Admiral

High gun violence areas do not exist in or around Seattle. Although…. I moved from Chicago

like

Same. It was so weird and reassuring after moving to rarely hear about gun violence on the news.

I like Bellevue, I live in Seattle but go to Bellevue on weekends for shopping, groceries, and restaurants.

Seriously?! What neighborhood are you in Seattle and what specific stores and restaurants are you visiting in Bellevue? Am I missing out on something?

West Seattle, best Seattle! Been here 8 years, don’t plan to ever leave.

West Seattle or just south of that in Burien. Lots of amazing, still affordable homes, a chill vibe, the most beautiful beach, and everything else you could want. Plus it’s a quick 15-minute trip downtown and 20 to Fremont/Ballard. We live on the prettiest, quietest, safest street in Burien. Best decision we made in moving here.

Suggest tou provide more context. Just you? or others in household (school considerations?) also personal preference regarding access to services and preferrence re more urban vs rural setting. Whitecenter, for example, is not a ‘safer’ community (unless you are armed and have video surveillance perimeter). If you dont mind longer commute and more rural: Duvall, Covington or up north in Snohomish county are less expensive options (not cheap, just less expensive). If you are single genZ looking for more urban vibe, checkout downtown Redmond- lots of new apartment development but it will cost you

Couple, mid-30s, not into nightlife so much. Would like to steer clear of high gun violence areas… willing to pay premium for safety. Good access to shops, groceries, restaurants here and there. Wfh for the most part with occasional travel downtown/airport.

Look into Bellevue downtown. Train to downtown Seattle is just about complete and it’ll save you commute time/sitting in traffic

like

Kirkland, Bellevue, Mercer Island

like

Columbia City or Rainier Beach is ok

like

I live in Green Lake and like it a lot. Dont love the aurora side of Green Lake though.

Having the lake/park nearby + coffee places/restaurants. Quick access to I5 without being “too close”

like

Northgate (seattle), Redmond, Renton

Redmond isn’t cheap

What neighborhood is best to live in for access/convenience?

like

Roosevelt / Ravenna as well

Plan to work in person, remote, or hybrid? The parking @downtown is insane. $16-18 per day (early bird special) or over $300 monthly.

I commute by light rail or bus now.

like

Fremont and Ballard are the best :)

like

Georgetown. Burien if you’re ok not being in the city. Easier commute coming from the south. Slightly cheaper too.

If safety is the priority, I recommend living on the Eastside. Mercer Island has incredibly expensive home prices, but the rent for the Shorewood apartment complex is very reasonable for the Seattle area (and pet friendly). MI is great because you get the safety, suburban feel of the Eastside with a 10-15 minute drive to downtown Seattle. Bellevue is the next closest city on the Eastside, and while it doesn’t have the same nightlife or restaurant options as Seattle, it has far more entertainment options than any other Eastside city.
