My best advice is to live in it a while and resist the urge to decorate too quickly. See how you live in it and how you move around before you commit to things. Command hooks are awesome for temporary solutions; can later be replaced with permanent decor.

Anything you really want to have done or change, i.e. Painting a bedroom, or changing out kitchen counters. Do it before you move in while the house is empty. Once you have all of your stuff in there, it's going to be a pain to get it done.

like

Along these lines, do a deep clean before you move in of the space + purge anything you no longer need.

I bought a house once. It was haunted. I’d strongly advise against buying a house that is haunted

Don’t take on any new debt decorating. Take your time and prioritize your pieces. If you’re not confident use a service like havenly or modsy to help you

Yes. Focus on quality over completeness and focus on things that will age well. Replacing cheap furniture sucks

THIS!

Please, don’t procure a house that is haunted. Not worth it, DM me for details.

What? For real? How do you know it was haunted?

If you have a home warranty I would read that front to back and make sure you 100% understand what is covered.

If you have wooden floors get them resanded or polished if the house is a bit older. Once you have furniture in there it will be a pain!

Don't unpack all your boxes up front. Just unpack what you need when you need it. If you have things in boxes after 6-12 months, you'll probably realize you don't need it. Easy purging done

like

Thrift & rework it. IMO it saves you so much money that you can reinvest into the house (if anything fails) but that’s just my two cents. Congrats on the homeownership!

Don't feel like it has to be perfect from day 1. Take some time and get a feel for how you want to use each room before you invest in furnishing and designing. Also, stockpile cash. Houses break often and bigly.

I always hire for taping. It’s cheap and people who do it day in day out are second to none. Always comes up perfect where mine is just good.

Check out Facebook Marketplace before you waste all your money on Wayfair. There's some great stuff that pops up on marketplace and you just have to keep looking. Also, pack and label your boxes according to need, not categorized by item. So coffee and mugs go together and get labeled as Day 1. Swimsuits and beach towels, which you are less likely to need right away get labeled as Week 4 because you can unpack that last.

helpful

You'll spend more maintaining it that you think. Get a basic set of tools so you can do things yourself. If you have the budget, hire landscape maintenance. Get a maid.
