Winters are awesome in Chicago. Restaurants, friends living rooms, bars, and even hanging in the park. Biggest 2 pieces of advice: 1) don’t be cheap when you buy your winter gear and 2) don’t be sad when it’s cold just bc that’s how you think you should feel, it’s a cool experience and it will be over soon enough, not to get dark but you never know when it could be your last winter (or anything for that matter) so enjoy it, embrace it, lean in to it!

Oh and concerts, places like Thalia Hall, Lincoln Hall, The Vic feel so good and cozy when it’s cold outside

Chicagoland native, I like the winters. Sue me. The bars are fun, friends are down to hang out at each other’s houses, etc. I like that to some extent the weather forces us to mix things up.

The reality is there’s maybe 15% of days in the winter months that are actually cold to the point of significantly impacting plans. It’s just not that big of a deal, people just like to play it up because there are those like <10% of winter days that get pretty extreme. Anywhere in the US with the exception of maybe Southern California and Hawaii have some sort of weather with the same impact, maybe not cold, but same net result (stay inside).

Unfortunately, there is a big ‘drinking’ culture here in Chicago.

It’s ok to partake, but keep your head.

DO NOT!

Get a solid coat, long underwear and snow boots with grip to dredge through it to still meet friends and enjoy the city. The L (subway train) is largely above ground so it is easier than expected to still get around when it snows. Everyone is in the same cold... and 180 wrap around ear muffs are wonderful to not have to deal with hat hair. Chicago does not stop, just walks slower like penguins to not slip on the snow and ice.

Honestly, life still goes on. People still go out and enjoy restaurants, concerts etc.
It’s not as bad as Montreal lol

Agree-I’ve bought good gear and go on walks, have started eating outside. We’re a hearty bunch and continue to socialize

Plan a vacation somewhere warm

TBH, it’s not the cold so much as the darkness. The days get short, be sure and get outside midday, get the sad light and enjoy your first chicago winter snow. It is absolutely beautiful until feb. Then things get ugly, like dirt snow and people sick of slogging through it. Plan to take a vacation then, it will help for that last push before spring. Another fun fact, the seasons here seem to change on the dot. Like today is fall. Yes, it is.

And today I could have switched the jeans for shorts. Gotta love the midwest
