1) definitely put a lock on your U-Haul if you stop overnight and try to back it against a wall, etc. to prevent theft.
2) Generally see if there is a loading dock or an alleyway that can be used instead but it’s not uncommon to have to park in the street, just make sure you park so people can get around you.
Safe travels and welcome to Chicago!
Second both of these, K1 is very spot on. I’ve moved countless times in Chicago into single family homes and always had to block the street. People are surprisingly accustomed to this as often there is no workaround.
A hotel probably isn't the worst idea. They'll have parking lots which will be much easier than trying to park a uhaul overnight in the city.
Nearly everyone who has moved into the city has had a moving truck so it's nothing new to people, just check with your landlord/management for the best way to do it
Welcome! You're coming to the city at the perfect time of year!

Whereabouts in Chicago? I’m in the north part of the city so probably not going to be useful for you, but if staying in Indiana isn’t going to work for your schedule or whatever you can leave your UHaul in front of my house and Uber to a nearby hotel (or your new house I suppose). I live in a suburb-like cop neighborhood, no one will bother it.
Thanks everyone. I am moving to LVE (I left Chicago but am back bc the grass isn’t always greener) into a graystone/3 flat, so no unloading area like a lot of high rises. But there is an alleyway I can use or just park on the street (these are the options the property manager gave me and you all pretty much had the same response).
Welcome back to The Chi, OP.
Also, don’t park near water towers prone to fall like I did on move in day.. (Zoom in to see)
If your building does not have an alley you can also request no street parking signs from the city for your move. Do you have someone in the city that can help you put them up a day or two ahead of time? Your realtor or landlord might be able to help you here.
you can park it in a U-haul center overnight. i moved few years back and parked huge penske in cicero area. the second time i parked at home depot around lincoln park that rents the truck brand i had.
Ohhhh I like this idea...will look into it, thank you!
I had the same concern when i moved up here a few years ago. The worry was baseless. All kinds of trucks in the downtown area. You’ll be fine. Most apartments have loading areas as well. What area will be located? I parked my moving vehicle at a hotel in the south loop for super cheap.

What neighborhood are you heading into? Parking can vary from not a big deal at all to a headache.
On my move to Chicago I stayed in Rosemont [by Ohare] the night I arrived. Huge parking lots there. I was at the Westin because I had my dog, but lots of options.
Just went thru this in Old Town. Normally you have to get signs from your local alderman to block off an area to park, but they arent doing that right now due to COVID. We literally parked the Uhaul in fromt of a hydrant with the flashers on for 2hrs while unloading. Never had an issue.
I would doublecheck your building to make sure you dont need pre-clearance for move-in date/time.
Guess I’ll jump on Google maps and find my nearest hydrant so I am prepared
Congrats! I did a similar move a couple years ago. I planned it so that the night before I stayed in Indianapolis for the night, then woke up and did the short 2 hour drive and had the entire day to unload and return the uhaul. I really enjoyed this plan and would recommend it to anyone else moving up. One thing to note, if you’re staying in Indianapolis for just the night you may be tempted to get a super cheap hotel by the highway, don’t, just get a normal (Renaissance or something) in the city proper. In terms of driving in Chicago, it’s a piece of cake, it was honestly easier than I expected and frankly easier than driving in a big city in the south - just have some confidence in yourself. Someone mentioned they stayed at a hotel near Ohare, that makes sense since there are large parking lots, but I wouldn’t overshoot Chicago by an hour just to get there, stay in Indiana on your way up. Welcome to Chi
Will look into this as well. Thanks!
