Moving to Dallas from NYC. How shocked am I going to be? Is anyone there normal? Have heard mixed things so just going to put on a cowboy hat and buckle up.

We’re are pretty normal here 🇺🇸. Most of the time we work on a farm, cowboy boots on 🤠🤠 saying “Hey y’all” “ Madam/Sir” to anyone or ANY LONGHORN COWS that we see 🫡🫡. Guns on the side of the hips, straight jeans, and cowboy boots 👢 all day every day y’all. Some of us will scream “Texas is the best COUNTRY IN THE WORLD. GOD BLESS ‘MURICA 🇺🇸” sometimes when we feel excited.
You’ll fit right in, my friend OP from New York!

I don’t think you will like it here. Based on your personality, you’ll have trouble making friends tbh.

Just a question, lol. “is anyone there normal” is quite the loaded question…

like

Please stay in NYC. Don't be New Yorking our Texas.

It’s a very different lifestyle. Some love it, some don’t. If you’ve been in the city your whole time it’s harder to adjust than if you’ve been in the suburbs at least part of your time. Dallas is a car city through and through. People talk up the walkability of Dallas but there aren’t many parts where you can have a great life without a car (or a huge Uber bill). People are less international close to downtown though DFW is still extremely diverse, it’s just spread out. I moved to Texas from Boston and everyone I’ve met here from the northeast hated it and left within 2 years or adopted Texas and this is home for them now. You’ll miss the walkability and nature of NYC but Dallas has lots of space so there’s pros and cons. Food is still excellent here though. Weather is better in DFW than pretty much anywhere north of Charleston on the east coast.

Agreed with this take as well. Knew several people in college who came from northeast and also couldn’t deal with the “southern hospitality” as well as the “quiet streets” in the middle of the day. Definitely seems like a big adjustment from a place where diversity is always prevalent and you’re constantly squeezed for space

Buy some boots and a hat- its required for business professional attire. A nice big shiny belt buckle will show you mean business. Save up some cash and buy a horse- it'll be your main mode of transportation as you trot across town. If there's a dispute during a meeting, that is settled by a duel. Left your gun at home? No worries, soneone will loan you one. Weekends are a hoot once you find your local waterin hole and your posse.

Dallas is just like any other big city. No surprises here!

Very shocked on walkability and city planning.

People are normal and skew more conventional in Dallas. It is a big city where dominant employers are large and conventional firms.

You can likely find your niche without bothering with a cowboy hat. DFW is one of the largest metropolitan areas in the U.S.

Dallas is, well, exceedingly normal. Take every negative or positive stereotype you have in your head and discard it.

For better or worse, you’ll find nothing is really that unusual here.

If you like outdoors, there is no hills and it’s hot as balls in the summer. If you like eating out, there are tons of options and you will be able to afford that better than NYC. If you don’t own a car, it will be a big adjustment. DFW is 100 miles across and then it is like 100 miles of not much outside of that. The “Texas friendly “ levels of people took a long time for me to think it wasn’t totally fake. If you like guns and OAN, you’ll probably love it.

Are you the same dummy who posted about eating barbecue a week ago?

Dallas is not what it used to be. I moved from NYC 5 yrs ago. You have as much social life, restaurants bars, music scene and more. In fact the rents in uptown are as comparable to Manhattan except that they are new and clean. The suburbs of Dallas are growing like crazy. Real estate values went to my 30% last year.
Good luck to you.

I got a job in-house 6 months after working at a law firm. I really love the work I’m doing (a little bit of everything) but am not getting the mentorship and training I should be getting. Do you think I should try to get a job at a law firm and then try to go back in-house in 2-3 years? Or just try to switch companies to get better mentorship?

I’m seeking a promotion from L2 to L3 by EOQ1 2023. I’ve set the expectation over the past year and my manager keeps saying “within the next year,” “within the next year.” By the next promotion cycle, I will have been in this role for a year and a half. I am the most junior on my team but I feel I’m consistently delivering better and faster than my senior colleagues. Not to mention my RSUs are drowning and I’m the most tenured at the company on my team. Tips on navigating this?
