Try Astoria! Cool friendly vibe with really good food and a quick ride into the city.
A two bedroom for 1.7 K in Astoria is almost unheard of. Your friend is very lucky
Brooklyn, so many good places. Budget may be tight for a 2 bed but I’d bet you can find something
You’ll get way more bang for your buck in Windsor Terrace and it’s super close to prospect park.
That’s not a doable budget for Manhattan. You should target Brooklyn / Queens / New Jersey
I live in Sunnyside. Can confirm.
$2500 2brs don’t exist and if they do it’s for a reason
So pretentious 😂 please do tell what’s wrong with Bed Stuy

Haha making poor life choices already. Stay in Texas.
I asked for areas to live in. Not whether I should move or not but thanks

If you want to be in Manhattan the the UES would probably be best bet

Yeah, the rules are strict north of 57th street. That’s how they control the peace up there. You gotta really click with the coop board and your financials have to be good or they can just reject you if they don’t like you. Then the condos don’t trust you if you are a renter. You basically can only live in your unit and that’s it. Elsewhere in the city, it’s way more lenient.
Don’t move to Jersey. No one will ever visit you. Might as well move to the Poconos and get a giant 5000 square foot log cabin and just commute to the city then.
Bay Ridge is a safe, affordable neighborhood for your budget — as long as you’re okay with a long train ride into the city.
That's going to be tough. My cousin rented a studio in UES @ $2k/mo
Damn lol
Have you begun searching yet? $2500 will be hard to meet, but there are places available. Check in Brooklyn and queens.
Side note: you may have to compromise on certain things like safety or washer dryer in unit.
OP, the areas people said are less safe are indeed less safe relative to many of the more expensive parts of nyc.
In terms of crime statistics, they aren’t horrible though, but you might feel uncomfortable at night as a woman.
Personally many of the family neighborhoods in Queens have felt safer to me than those in Brooklyn. Example, lived in Sunnyside for a bit. That area was mostly Hispanic families (and I’m not Hispanic) going about their day. Most of these queens neighborhoods will be less exciting than Brooklyn, so that’s the trade-off.
$2,500 for a 2br? Going to be very hard in Manhattan unless you're okay with a 5 floor walk up in Harlem.
LIC definitely an option, some areas of the Bronx are okay too. Brooklyn and Jersey City are probably out of your budget.
And then there's Staten Island. But don't.
You can get a REALLY tiny 2 bedroom with an awful layout anywhere in Manhattan for that price. If you want decent 2 bedroom for $2500 you would have to go to far corners of queens, Brooklyn, upstate NY or NJ
Surprised no one has suggested OP browse on StreetEasy.com for what is available in their price range. (Nothing much in Manhattan, but doable in the outer Burroughs). Also might consider Hoboken or Jersey City which are both just across the river and allow easy access to manhattan while giving you greater flexibility given your budget.
Maybe if you are only looking at luxury buildings. StreetEasy shows almost 500 listings for 2 bedrooms in the area under $2500
Bay Ridge for space and affordability…but it’s not a quick commute. 1hr to midtown. You’ll like the laid back vibe and space though
Really depends, are you working in the city? And Are you planning to do hangouts in the city?
Queens would be a good option, the more East you go the more affordable/the more space and amenities you’ll get esp considering you need something for 2 people plus 2 dogs.

Based on what you’ve described as ideal, I think Queens is a better option for you than Brooklyn. Astoria and Sunnyside as going to be the most frequent Queens suggestions, but don’t overlook Rego Park, Forest Hills, and Kew Gardens. Safe, affordable, and plenty of restaurants without being as loud as some of the other neighborhoods.
Seconding Kew and Forest Hills! Very affordable and spacious options, and if you take the LIRR you can be in midtown in 20m or less.
Definitely recommend Bay Ridge. You can get a lot for your budget and it's a great neighborhood for dogs. The downside is the commute, but the affordability and amount of space is worth it.
Hoboken and Weekhawkan are your best bet.
As another suggestion, if you only need the second bedroom for space/office, consider looking at ground floor apartments with a rec room. A rec room is not a legal bedroom, so the apartment will be considered a 1 bedroom, but you will still have the extra space. Some people feel strongly against living on a ground floor apartment (and there can be some problems), but it can also have some nice perks, especially if you have dogs! I live on the UWS on the ground floor (with a rec room) and have a private backyard for my two dogs. It is really convenient to not have to leash them up every time one of them needs to use the bathroom!
I love the UWS! I love the residential feel of the neighborhood and being close to Central Park (and that there are dogs everywhere)! I would definitely recommend that you check it out when you look at apartments.
