You can always meet a friend if you want solv some company. But you can’t get rid of roommates whenever you want.

Most critical question to answer: do you already have friends in NY, or can you expect your coworkers to become friends outside of work? It can be rly hard to make new friends in Ny especially under COVID so if the answer is no, suggest you live with roommates.

like

A great point - my earlier post assumes you have a network in NYC already. If not, I see more reason to go random.

Also really consider your risk tolerance as it pertains to COVID. If you have roommates, they may want to go out and about all the time, or have friends visit and stay over when COVID rates spike again. You wouldn’t really be able to tell them no since it’s their apartment too. So if that could potentially bother you, may want to live alone

This perspective is always dependent on budget. I’m personally okay with living alone and having my own space, and moving into a 1-bed when I was financially able to was a positive change.

Both sides have pros and cons and you can’t get all pros. List down all the pros and cons on a piece of paper of both living situations and see which side you like better 👍.

How picky are you about cleanliness, noise, cooking smells, guests, etc? If you don’t know them first, you need to be prepared to have different expectations. Also, given covid, if your roommate was being more reckless than you, how worried would you be? Factors to consider! It’s nice to have roommates, but that’s if you’re friends. Randoms might never be home or not be interested in being friends. It’d be great if you could find a friend or mutual friend looking for housing! Otherwise solo might be the way to go.

As a BCGer... Would look into subletting from someone in the NYC office with a BCG roommate. Narrows down the pool so it’s not quite random, and good chance you’ll make some friends in the office that you wouldn’t otherwise given COVID situation.

Get your own place if you are worried about Covid. You can’t control where your roommates go or what they do.

Moving to NYC next year, and my SO is based in Seattle. He is very keen to spend more time with me in NYC, even suggesting living there while remote working is still a thing. I’m a little hesitant bc we’ve only been dating for 2-3 months and it would feel like moving in tgt. Also not sure if i should be looking for a studio or 1br for more space but at a much higher price tag that i have to pay for. Any thoughts?

A big fear of mine lately has me feeling like a terrible human being. My brother in law had a small covid wedding last year, I was so excited to go but had to cancel last minute because I started miscarrying a few days before the wedding, at 5 weeks. I ended up watching the livestream, and miscarried during the wedding, alone at home (I urged my husband to go to the wedding and that I’d be fine, my parents were checking in on me). I haven’t been able to get preg since. (Contd in comments)
