This is an important question and certainly one I have grappled with in my career. First in for most, we must struggle for access to the teaching profession for more candidates of color because this is what our students need in fact what students need this too. For now, the reality is that there are many more white teachers and we have to train these teachers to be proper allies in urban schools. I think a white teacher, old or young, needs to Come to terms with their privilege, recognize the many ways and operates, and work as an anti-racist in every way possible. I think of the Bettina Love’s recent book and abolitionism as an example of the kind of work so we should be studying. There is much more to say, but won’t let me add one more thing: I think a thoughtful white teacher who wants to dedicate her career to fighting racism should also consider working in more white schools. After all where does racism come from? From the white community. These are the people who need some edification in social justice.
