We also made a big deal out of the person who got bitten while ignoring our son. Sometimes he would bite one of us while playing, like he got super excited and forgot himself. So we’d go like this:
Daddy: “Ouch, Son bit me!”
(Ignore son entirely, Daddy stops playing and turns to me.)
Me: “Daddy, are you okay? Biting really hurts. Can I see? Oh wow, that looks like it hurts. Are you okay?”
Daddy: “It really hurts. I’m sad because it hurts.”
Etc., etc. You can go on longer if it’s a bad bite, or shorter. Give the person bitten the attention and talk about how it hurts them. It seemed to work for us as our son doesn’t bite anymore.
Make a big show of it hurting if you get bit, read Dinos Don't Bite and Teeth are Not for Biting, try to redirect before it happens, and then wait for kid to outgrow. Hope it passes soon for you but may be a few months!
Ty! ❤️ Just bought one of the books!
Highly recommend this book and lots of conversations about consent and kindness https://g.co/kgs/Jvswz1
Thank you! Just bought it! ❤️
It’s all about redirection at this age.
And just so you know, it’s a totally normal developmental phase (albeit an unfortunate one). They communicate other ways (biting/hitting/ etc) until they grow out of the phase/mature and become more comfortable with verbal communication.
Just stay consistent. It’s really on daycare to redirect your kiddo and then you reinforce positive behavior at home. But just know it’s normal and the behavior will end!
