My agency is suspending 401k match contributions through the end of the year as part of cost cutting measures. Is it still worth it for me to contribute without the match? CONT

Yes. Keep investing in your future, mate.

I'm definitely going to keep investing/saving, but without their match, does it make sense to invest elsewhere instead or keep my current 401k contribution level?

OP, you do realize that contributions to your 401(k) is pre-tax, right? It lowers your current taxable income.

With or without match, everyone should be maxing out their contributions, which is $19.5k for 2020.

helpful

That's a really good point, and yeah I totally forgot the contributions were pre-tax. That said I'll keep my contribution the same. I'm just disappointed I'm losing out on the free money element of the employer match.

Or should I eliminate my contribution and continue to invest in my IRA in the meantime and add to my other investments?

People will jump in and say continue to contribute, but that’s not always the best case.

You are locking your money away until you retire, do you want to do that if there’s no employee match? Or would you value more liquidity when you need it?

There are ways to access the money in 401(k). The reason they aren't well known is because you really shouldn't be using that retirement money for anything else.

I accepted a new job with a local district through my state DPH. I was excited and a little nervous at first. It's my first full-time position in several years and I will have state benefits along with "regular" hours. No more shift work. Unfortunately I am hearing some not so good opinions about management. I'm trying not to listen and make my own decisions based off experience-not word of mouth, but I'm beginning to worry. Anyone have any experience with something similar or working DPH?

Is there anyone who’s experienced helping their parents get health insurance? Specifically, they aren’t eligible for Medicare, make too little to qualify for ACA subsidies, and cannot get employer-provided insurance. Only option is to pay standard premiums - and if that ultimately is the case, fine. Not trying to find loopholes, but given their low-income, would be nice to know if there are programs I’m not finding in my rsch.

Hey all I have an opportunity to buy a vacation home as a private sale from my parents (they are buying a new house in that area and need to sell the old one), it is waterfront property in NH 10 minutes from Mt Sunappee. I am concerned that making this purchase may make me a little cash poor in the short term, but still manageable. Would it make more sense to rent out the property through a rental company that included insurance and cleaning or to put it on airbnb?

Is this reasonable or am I missing something?

I started maxing my 401k from year 1 and I hope to have $5 million or more by the time I retire around 60. Wouldn’t it make sense to put all of my yearly $19,500 401k contribution to ROTH 401k instead of traditional 401k?

My reasoning is that I would pay 35% tax now and my remaining 65% would grow tax-free in ROTH 401k…. versus traditional 401k where I deposit 100% but every distribution will be taxed 35% assuming I make a lot in retirement.
