My agency wants to promote me. I want to leave. Worried the job hunt would be even tougher as a GCD. Am I crazy for not wanting a promotion? Should I take it while I look & search both levels? (1/2)

Fellow lady here. Take the promotion. Don’t doubt yourself. Think of the biggest asshole hack you knew in your career. Do you think they would have refused the promotion? No! Get the title. Get the money. Then take it and go out and get what you want. Clearly you have talent or they wouldn’t want to promote you. And just because you accept a promotion doesn’t mean you can’t take it and run.

It’s a tough position to be in. The market is so bad right now that myself and every CD I know are grabbing ACD and even senior title positions. My advice is to take the promotion and the $$$ that goes with it while looking elsewhere as a CD. Yes there’s a new level of stress in a GCD role, but the experience you’ll be getting will be beneficial to you, even in a CD role. Congrats though and good luck!

Trust your instincts. If you’re even thinking of getting out... it’s not time to go deeper in. You’ll be like that dude that runs up the stairs in every horror movie instead of going out the front door.

Let them promote you and make the $$$ whole you job hunt. If you absolutely have to take a CD job somewhere else it’ll be worth it if the agency is better. Being at a failing agency right now is not pleasant

If your portfolio/experience doesn't show for it, apply to other agencies as a CD vs gcd and take the money while you hunt. Give it a few months for good measure and bounce in the fall.

like

You don't have to tell anyone you got promoted. Stay listed as a cd on your LinkedIn and in your book. But get that gcd money.

Always. Take. The. Promotion. Fake it til you make it.

(2/2) I’ve been a CD for almost two years, during which I took 5 months off to have a baby. Times have been tough, clients have been tougher, agency is a mess…long story short, I’ve launched exactly one campaign in two year’s time. Because of that, I feel I‘ve barely gotten the chance to be a CD. And if I go with this, I’ll be a GCD without a lot of experience that’s visible in my book. Also worth noting: I know I’m underpaid as a CD (hooray gender pay gap!). I’m guessing they won’t come with a dump truck full of $ with the title upgrade. Would rather not be a bargain GCD, honestly.

like

Take the promotion. Without question.

like

I can’t even imagine getting 5 months off to have a baby. Maybe you should stay there.

Take it, good luck, and see how it pans out. You dont have to be afraid to put it on LinkedIn. People probably had to fight for you to get the promo. They believe in you. Be happy, be proud, kick ass! And when you find the next awesome step in your journey, take it once you feel it is truly the right fit. Don't lose sight of the good little things you may have at your current agency, we can forget ablut those.

Take the promotion and keep looking until you find the right gig. Especially as a new parent, a new job will mean more late nights and weekends.

like

Take it. You don’t need to have imposter syndrome. You’ll be great

like

Take the deal. I’m a newish CD who was laid off and currently looking at ACD and CD positions. It’s tough out here. Be the best damn GCD you can and don’t look back. If you leave later, then make it a good move.

like

Take the promotion, but leave it off your LinkedIn. Extra cash will help. Then you can find something that’s a better fit for where you are. (And you’re very smart not to want to grow too fast.)

like

Get it, girl! Take the promotion, take the money and keep looking.

like

If you’re leaving because they failed to promote you in a timeframe that felt unfair, then first make sure there weren’t valid reasons they didn’t or couldn’t. If there are valid reasons take the promotion. If there are ANY other reasons you wanted to leave, then do so.

like

Take the promotion and keep looking. Slim pickens out there!

I think titles are easier to come by than happiness. I’d get out and go somewhere where you’ll be happy

Are any of you CDs that were promoted to GCDs at small to mid-size agencies where the creative department is not technically divided into groups? If so, what added responsibilities were assigned to you with the promotion? As overall viewership falls in a post-Trump era and waning COVID numbers, big media has to be a little nervous about audience retention.
