My babe didn't start to really walk until 13 months or so. She also is just starting to talk up a storm at 18 months. She said Mama and Dada a lot and then one day, just stopped. She has done that with other things, it's like, "OK...I mastered this one skill, I'm done doing it now." She only says Mama now when she's crying. I think her not being at daycare has stunted her learning a bit, bit since being back last week she's a completely different kid, for the better! Also, my pediatrician said if she still isn't saying real words and just babbling by 20 months then we should call Early Intervention.
I'm right there with you,100%! I'm glad I could help! She also starts her swim classes tomorrow, finally! Also, like others have said, definitely talk with your pediatrician and get their feedback. It will be good to get piece of mind!
Totally fine. My son didn’t walk until 15 months (anything under 18 mo is fine). He also didn’t really start talking until 20 months. 2 now and a chatterbox. Rapid language development doesn’t start for most kids until 18 mo
You should talk to your ped about your concerns and see if there’s reason to be evaluated. But based on your explanation this doesn’t seem concerning one bit.
Cruising is the 1 year milestone (CDC), so it’s okay if they’re not walking yet.
And for language: Says “mama” and “dada” and exclamations like “uh-oh!”
Here is the link to the CDC 12 month milestone list: https://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/actearly/milestones/milestones-1yr.html

Your fine... my first barely spoke until 2.5 (we had him evaluated and no issues) and is 4 now and WILL. NOT. STOP. TALKING.
For walking, huge range. My first walked super early, but never crawled. Second crawled and did not really walk until 12 months.
Rising Star
None of my four kids walked before 12 months. One was up by 13 months and the latest one was 16 months (but we attribute this to her just being a super chill baby). As far as talking, all of my kids needed speech therapy when they weren’t saying words by 18 months. Also important to know that ‘words’ can be any sounds they use with meaning (e.g., ‘bah’ for bottle counts). All of my kids did fine after a jump start of speech therapy between 18months and 3 years. So in short, it’s probably fine but always good to get your Ped’s input!
My little one started walking at 13 months. I got worried too. My ped said it’s perfectly normal. I’m getting worried again because he’s 19 months now and only says a handful of “words” in his mind, but are not actual words in English. Like he’ll say “mo” for water, food, anything out of reach or “eh eh” if he wants to go upstairs or climb the bed. He understands “mommy” and “daddy” but have not said it yet. Going to give him another month before I have him evaluated for speech therapy, but most likely (and hopefully) he’ll start saying more words in the coming weeks!
What did your ped say at the 18 mo check-up?

Talk to your ped. Re the talking, if they are babbling that is a good sign. Your ped will likely first recommend a hearing test if they recommend anything at all. We did one and it was reassuring. My SIL did one with her 1 year old and he failed and needed tubes...despite never having signs of an ear infection. He’s now talking up a storm!
You are totally fine! My daughter is 18 months and just now started more words than “dada” and “mama”. She started walking around 1 year, and some of my friends’ kids didn’t really go independently until 14 months. My pediatrician told me that her limited vocabulary is ok but in the next 6 months should pick up and she should know 30-50 words by the time she turns 2.
Just encourage your child with lots of books and lots of repetition... you’ll be amazed when they just start full sentences out of nowhere! 😀
Hey there. My kids are 20, 18, and 14 now. Each of them did their things in their own times: 20 yo talked before 12 mos, didn’t walk until 16 mos. 18 yo walked at 13 mos, talked at 16 mos. 14 yo walked at 18 mos, talked around 13 mos. All 3 of them are super-smart, physically adept, and all around remarkable young men. All do sports, all get great grades, all have advanced vocabularies, etc. Your 1 yo is fine and you’re doing a great job! I promise.

There’s a wide range of “normal.” I wouldn’t sweat it
My daughter didn’t start walking until two weeks ago ( 18 months) and now she’s almost running. They all progress at their own pace! She also didn’t start crawling until about 15 months
Thanks all! This sounds reassuring. I did talk to my ped at his 12 month check up and he didn’t seem concerned since he’s babbling.
I don’t think it’s hearing. He understands what I say.. “like go get the ball” he’ll get the ball or “go get a book” etc.
I think I just go down a worry spiral at times. Thanks all!
I walked at 18 months and my mom took me to the dr who said they wouldn't even bother investigating until at least 21 months. Every babe is different, try not to worry or compare.
Re speaking, anecdotally I've heard boys can take longer to speak than girls. And any additional language he is learning will slow him down. My boy is being brought up trilingual so am fully expecting him to talk when hes 5 😅
Please DO NOT WORRY. Normal walking age is between 10-18 months, I know babies that did it at 8. My daughter was not interested in walking, being walked, etc. Maybe because she was too good at crawling and figured out ways to carry stuff while "walking" on her knees, who knows. Finally took a few steps at 16M and walking more competently-ish now at 17M. Instead she was REALLY into language development. She would literally read for 2 hours by herself, then badger us to read to her for 2 more hours a day. Whereas all her friends were going from walking to running around, she has just had a language explosion that most of them haven't had yet. Every child is different. I had to let go of my expectations of walking, early potty training, etc. when it was really clear that she was working to her own schedule and nothing was developmentally wrong.
