My base as of Counsel is $350k, no bonus for 1900 hours at Amlaw 100. Can I make more in midlaw?

At my former midlaw “powerhouse” firm, counsel made $200k. Most partners made $275, except for the rainmakers who made about $1mm. I left midlaw for biglaw for a reason! Same hours, half the pay (unless you happened to have a massive book of business)!

Do you have any biz?

No I work primarily for a single partner, with whom I lateraled over with.

No biz, just a service attorney

like

What year?

Old, class of 2008.

Normal for counsel, that’s not old.

like

My exp is at your level a firm expects a book.

Why would counsel do midlaw 2k for $200k? That’s lower than in house counsel pay

Actually I just looked up an old midlaw offer from 2018 and it was $205k so I guess you are right

Negotiate or move - you can do better up the food chain even without business (though it may come with correspondingly more stress even if not more hours). Do you get a bonus? Counsel at my old firm would get 550-600k especially in niche groups. I make less at new firm but comparatively super relaxed environment with 1800 aim for bonus.

I did not get bonus due to low collections ($815k) and $100k bonus the year before

What practice area are you?

Litigation

$350 with zero book (and apparently zero expectation that you have a book) is pretty good I’d say. What is your rate?

If you are collecting $1M total you are more or less fairly compensated. If you are collecting $1.9M (or even $1.5M), you are underpaid

Do I base it on my experience as a BA or combined experience?I’ve worked as a management consultant for 4 yrs, got placed in a contract as an Agile BA for the last 2 yrs. Total work experience supporting government clients: 11 years. Don’t have a degree is IMS or engineering but have pursued my PMP and CSM.

What’s a standard salary for a creative copywriter that is past junior level but isn’t quite senior yet?

Been KPMG and have had some great opportunities. I recently put myself on the market and I am in talks with Deloitte and Accenture. Based on my conversations, the compensation seems comparable. Deloitte seems to have a lower salary but higher bonus, the reverse for Accenture. I’m leaning towards Accenture because they seem more chill and reasonable.
Any additional insight? Pro and cons between the two?

Thoughts about this:

Fidelity's rule of thumb: Aim to save at least 1x your salary by 30, 3x by 40, 6x by 50, 8x by 60, and 10x by 67

Realistic or not? And at what level of income?

AITA: currently interviewing for a great role and have made it to the final round. Normally, would be pretty interested, but it’s just not the right time career-wise for me to be switching jobs. I want to go through with it to a) test the salary market and b) practice my interviewing. Should I have dropped out by now? FWIW, they reached out to be - I didn’t seek out this role.

What are peoples thoughts on two different career paths within public accounting. One is the typical longer hours like 55 hours or more during busy season and the other one is 40 hours a week all year long with a reduced salary, almost like a reduced schedule employee. The reduced hour career path allows you to enjoy whatever you enjoy about public without the long hours but your career progression will be similar to industry and the other path is pretty much what it is now. Thoughts?

I am 26 and I’ve basically stopped trying to plot out my career. I’ve basically decided that the profession will take me where it wants to and I should stop trying to force things because of external factors like COVID-19 or salary increases. Am I being as defeatist as my friends make me think? Or have I just accepted that this profession ruthlessly sorts people for random reasons.

During the initial screening call the recruiter asked me for salary expectations I said it was too early to tell. I asked them to share a range & they did. Now that I’ve finished interviewing they’ve followed up & asked me again about salary expectations. I replied with a range between 5-10%>the high end of their range based on market research & my experience exceeding their requirements. I’m concerned the hiring manager will discard me b/c my counter was higher. Thoughts?
