American life has it’s own positives. I am a South Asian and it was a busy life, lot going and so many people every single day. I miss that on some days for sure.

But here, I cut down on that external noise and can focus on my self better plus I picked up hobbies that I wouldn’t have otherwise (because no one else around was into it)

America is a great place to socialize if you find the right group. I am an immigrant, albeit I came here young. If she came at an older age, past college etc, then it can be harder I’ll say.

like

Yup. She’s right. I’m an immigrant too and the focus here is work, work, work. I lived in Dominican Republic and attitude was different. People took the time to come to your house, visit, and get to know you. A lot of time was spent with friends and family.

Aussie here and I agree. I have unfortunately experienced through covid that what I thought were some close friendships disintegrated when we stopped doing the thing that brought us together. Extra tough when you don’t have family over here to escape to

As a Brit in the US, I definitely agree the social dynamic is different. My friendships here definitely feel more ‘networky’ (I just made up that word) and less genuine. I feel that is driven by the work culture and how society is so focused on everyone trying to get ahead - in the UK, and Europe, people aren’t fighting tooth and nail to do that, which I think leads to more authentic relationships. But the US has other advantages too.

like

True. In my experience, Europeans really work by day - highly focused, very little chit chat or drama. then shut things off the moment they step out of the office. Americans tend to be chit chatty throughout the day and extend the work talk and gossip well into after hours.

I'm not an immigrant but have a couple immigrant friends and I can say for sure that they do a LOT more as a family. Simple things like a bbq in the park and larger things like family vacations with a caravan of 3 or 4 cars.

like

Pwc3 I'm not sure what your beef is here. The original question was about a woman who found the US to be a lonely place and you take this to be 'shitting on America'. I would much rather live in the US than any other country, but in my experience my immigrant friends spend a lot more time socializing than my American born friends. Maybe your case is different. Yes we sometimes we have big cookouts too in my family but it's like one or two per year vs. 20 per year. After work I am much more likely to do things like go to the gym, clean the house, sit around and watch tv than to pay a social visit. I can count how often I see my friends as x times per month or in some cases x times per year, it is far from a daily experience.

I don’t think America is very lonely by default. We sometimes forget how much relationship building work is already done for us when we are born into a community.

I'm a first gen American, grew up in the Midwest and I really really agree. I tend to be less American socially than my sister and cousins. All of the friends I kept from HS were other first gen Americans I just moved to NY and i stay mostly in the immigrant areas and it finally feels like I can last in the US. Like I can really find my people and socialize in the way that makes most sense to me. All that to say, i really agree and I've found a lot of comfort in NYC so she should try it if she wants to stay. I'll introduce her to places myself 😊

My dad is an immigrant and hates socializing with other people.

I can see how a Parisian in the Midwest would get so bored, especially during pandemic. I mean work, eat with immediate family, watch tv or retreat to watch or play games or browse social, sleep, repeat, is a rather American way of life. Especially during these past couple of years.

Previous firm culture was all about the people, new firm is all about being the best... I knew the stereotype here was about being *the best*, but didn’t realize that people who buy into firm culture/values just repeatedly talk about how “we’re the best,” and, “we work REALLY hard bc we’re the best!!” I’m trying to commit, but end every internal call where I hear these words feeling like 🥴😶🙄. At least at the old firm there were relationships to back up the people piece and make it relatable.
