My best friend just got diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. Life is fleeting. Don’t let work eat you alive.

Agreed! I beat cancer recently and have a different outlook on work now. Sorry to hear about your friend, there is amazing cancer treatment out there that is advancing daily, sending positive vibes.

Don't sweat the small stuff, work/life balance is priority, planning partial retirement sooner, being kinder to everyone and if I want to do something, I do it, don't hold back.

Interesting reading this in contrast to the I'm so rich but have nothing to spend it on and can't get mine and my friends / partners calenders to align and spend time with them.

Spend time with friends and family before they are taken from you.

I last saw dad in August 2019. Then covid travel restrictions and an immunocomromised dad meant the next time I WA in his presence was to eulogise.

Sorry for your loss. May he RIP

I’m so sorry to hear this. Buried a 28 year old relative today after the same thing happened to him. Wishing you & your friend some measure of peace, and thanks for the reminder to really live while we’re here.

She has 2 boys and a husband who love and need her dearly. She lives a very family focused life. It just jarred me. Like, What am I doing? I have no husband or kids. Why is this not me? And also, why do I work 12 hrs a day when tomorrow I could be in her situation.

I was reminded of this in December. I also lost my sibling for cancer at the age of 28. We bury ourself into work so much that we don’t realize that our life is flying by. We’re spending most of it worrying about work that doesn’t even matter in the grand scheme of the things. God forbid, if any of us get diagnosed with these types of disease we’d definitely regret we spent majority of our time worrying about work and not on enjoying life, accomplishing things we dream of, traveling world, creating family, etc.

OP - Amen! People on here talking about working 70,80,90 hours a week for companies that don’t give a damn about them in the long run.

My happiness, family, work life balance mean entirely too much to me to give up.

I saw a post here the other day where a kid was about to join BCG and was asking is it too much to expect 8h of sleep everyday working at BCG. That broke my heart! Why do we do this to ourselves and find every reason on the earth to justify it? Then something like this happens, we pause for a moment, then back to the grind.

Also applies to dedicating too much of your youth to saving money. Financial prudence is good, but don’t forget to enjoy the moment. Spending some money now on things that enrich your soul (be that travel, experiences, dining out, hobbies, whatever) is the best investment you can make. Youth is fleeting; you’ll miss it when it’s gone.

So sorry to read that. Agree with your sentiment. We are only on this planet for a very short time.... so take advantage of it.

Not all stage 4 cancer is an immediate death sentence. My mother in law is stage 4 breast cancer. We worry everyday but her diagnosis was 5 years ago. It all depends on the type, treatment etc. don’t give up all hope yet.

Yes, thank you

My sister battled cancer...breast cancer and over a period of 1.5 year it advanced to stage 4 / spread to her brain. She passed away in November last year. I am still learning to process everything.

Found out today an elderly client of mine had a series of strokes and is essentially a vegetable. I met in person with her just 6 months ago. She was a lovely lady. Sad. Makes me realize life is indeed short and to enjoy every minute.

I’m a female who lives with my SO. We’ve been dating for years and we fight a lot so it’s possible a breakup is near. Do you think it would be difficult to date while living with my ex as roommates in a 2br/2ba? We have a lease that’s not even halfway done. In other words, would a man be uninterested in a woman who’s living with her ex (but of course being appropriate after the breakup)?

Am I crazy to take the leap into purchasing out first investment property during this wild market (crazy rate increases, wild house prices, etc.)? Looking for a good deal on a fixer-upper to buy and rent out for the long haul. Plan is to leverage equity from our primary residence for a down payment via Home Equity Loan.

US: I am married for 12+ years,. I have a feeling that my consulting career has more excitement than my marriage. With personal life lot has happened.. breakups in earlier stages, patch up, her career is ok but she is not that ambitious so kind of fully dependent.. no kids due to some issues.. but we hve been there for each other, we love each other but it’s not anymore exciting but that’s why I don’t care about WLB.
