1. Definitely ask if they have a registry 2. Gift card - usually gives the parent flexibility to buy whatever they need. I’m not a huge fan of this, but have heard from SEVERAL mom friends that they would any day prefer this to redundant or not-so-useful gifts. Having said that, these are the ones I use most for my baby boy in that price range: 1: Nose Frida kit(snot sucker, fridababy 3-1 picker, frida comb set, etc)- you can do multiple ones separately (cuz the picker doesn’t come in the essentials kit I think) or the essentials kit 2: Baby Susher(game changer) 3: baby carrier(Moby, Lille, infantino)- have all three and use all three for different parts of the day and activities 4: Bouncer/Swing-we use the Fischer price swing but not sure if that’s within that price point. Would try the bouncer or any other brand works too 5: Donate to diaper fund if they have one set up 6: Play gym 7: Boppy Lounger Some of these are cheaper than $80. But you could totally combine a few items(all of us like getting multiple gifts instead of one, who are we kidding) lol

Great ideas. I’ll add the bum brush too (spatula for diaper cream). Diaper cream is so hard to get off your hands!

If she lives in a city, I would extra emphasize the waiting for a registry point. If she's not registering, I would add: Bella tunno or similar big with a crumb catcher MagneticMe onesies-- so expensive that I won't buy them for myself but man are they awesome

I got a magneticme onesie as a gift and loveeeeeee it.
The wee gallery art cards are great !
These are all amazing recommendations! Thank you so much! I appreciate all of the detailed responses.

Diapers
As a city dweller, I actually hated receiving diapers. They take up a ton of space and will be so dependent on the size that the baby arrives in terms of what we need. People sent us sizes that we won't need for months from Amazon so not the easiest to exchange or return. If they have a basement or other storage space, great. If they're in an apartment, gift certificates for diapers are probably preferable.

Elvie Catch. Don't waste those precious drops of breastmilk by letting it soak into the nursing bras.
Anything feeding related might be controversial for a sister’s friend… you never know people’s positions or constraints with breast/pumping/bottle
