Yes, I struggle with this too, but self-compassion has helped me so much. Idk about you, but for me this happens most often when I make a mistake or when something unexpected happens. Through therapy I’ve realized that I get frustrated because I’ve always subconsciously tried to overcompensate for my ADHD with perfectionism and constant control. If I am a perfectionist and I control everything then less unexpected things happen, which limits the mistakes my ADHD can let me make, right? Sure, but also making mistakes is normal and it’s not sustainable to always be in control of everything. There’s things I’ll be worse at because of my ADHD, but there’s so many thing that I’ll be better at, too.
Another cause for frustration for me is having a task that I need to do and not knowing how to start it. The being stuck feeling makes me super frustrated, but I now use it as a trigger to get myself to pause and re-evaluate how I’m doing a task rather than just pushing through it. 9/10 I can restructure the way I’m doing the task so it makes sense to my brain and the path forward becomes clear. Hope this helps!
Aw, I totally relate, OP! I also beat myself up a lot before I was diagnosed and for many months after (and I still do sometimes, let’s be real). We didn’t know any better and we were coping as best as we could. Think about it this way: you’ve been trying to unlearn in two years all the unhealthy coping mechanisms you had for the many more years prior. It’s going to take time! But we will get there, I promise.
You have to have to have to have to get some cardio or exercise in before the crash. Helps me a ton. At the bare minimum it takes away the frustration/agitative state, but you’ll still feel sort of numb. Either way better than lashing out
That’s a side effect from Vyvanse specifically that some people experience. Have you tried adderall XR 1x/day + a booster instead?
I’m on Vyvanse personally. One thing that helps me is making sure I eat enough throughout the day (even when not hungry), including a good amount of protein. Also, a lot of water, and I usually drink some caffeine later in the day to somewhat smooth out the crash feeling
I'm trying to get off medications completely. I only take Vy 20 mg on days with a heavy workload (may be 2-3 a week) . Concerned about the long term effects but thanks for your suggestions.
My Dr mentioned Ashwagandha that I could use to stabilize my mood but I have not used to consistently enough to notice the difference.
My SO has very similar behavior
Sounds like the agitation is more side effect of the meds than from the adhd. Talk to your prescribing doc about the agitation and timing
Thanks, but agitation and irritation were always there. Getting frustrated waiting in line or traffic is how I sensed I might have ADHD and got diagnosed after. I would say that I don't notice these symptoms as much when I am on meds only after it wears down.
Yeah, I also have a very low frustration tolerance. Particularly for stupidity. I have no tips, just feel the same.
Best I can offer is write down the rant in a draft to get out your angst and never send it lol
