My biglaw job is not amazing, but also isn’t terrible. I like some of the people and a partner or two. The work, though, is boring and as my seniority increases I just get more of it. I don’t want to be partner and I’ve been ready to leave for a few years. But, now that I got an offer to go in-house I feel sad and guilty about leaving the only legal job I’ve ever had. Am I being disloyal by leaving? What about the friends/colleagues I’m leaving behind? Are these feelings normal?

I just chalk this up to fear of change (which everyone faces to some degree). Go back to first principles though - you know you don’t want to do what you’re doing now, so take the leap.

Fear of change is also my biggest thing preventing me from leaving. I’m struggling but at least I’ve gotten to know so many people so I’m comfortable in that respect. But to go through applying, interviews, vetting places… ugh.

I just lateraled from a firm I had been at for a decade and had similar feelings of sadness. The move has been great and I don’t regret it a bit!

like

Feelings normal but in no way disloyal. If your heart is not in it you won’t be a good partner and it’s probably obvious anyway. I suspect firm will be happy when you leave if it’s somewhere you could later send business.

Disloyal? Do they match your 401k or give you free healthcare? How about encourage you to use your vacation time? I didn’t think so. So there is no loyalty. Gtfo.

The feeling you are having is because you’ve been brainwashed and that’s how the rich keep employees into being suckers.

Crossposted. Looking for advice. I’ve got 10+ years as an attorney and have been trying to go in house for over a year. I have a generalist background (although I’m primarily a litigator) and was a partner at an Amlaw 100 firm. I’ve had my resume reviewed and keep getting great feedback. Not getting many interviews and when I do, I’m not getting offers despite positive interviews. How do I differentiate myself? Should I get some sort of certification or specialty? This is getting depressing.

This is my first job in a large corporate company, and I’m trying to gauge how long it normally takes to move from entry level to another internal position in the insurance industry. I have been applying internally for a year now and I am wondering if this is normal or if my company is just slow? I am a top performer, with great metrics, and I have some wonderful connections I’ve made who support me. I just can’t seem to move up. How long did it take you to move up? How many tries did it take?

I don’t really know what to do. I somewhat enjoy doing commissions online, but i eventually want to move away from it to work on bigger projects. I don’t have the skills yet, so I have to be patient. However commissions alone aren’t enough for me to live on, and I just want a temp or part time job to help with the extra income. I have been having a hard time finding work, and I honestly feel like I have 0 skills. Portfolio wise, nothing I have is acceptable for looking for work.

Additional Posts in Big Law

Is it crazy to consider a move in-house at the moment, given the market? Heading into my 4th year and now that I’ve received an interview request, I’m semi-panicking, thinking it may be safer to tough it out in big law for a little longer instead. FWIW, the opportunity is in-house at a well-funded startup and a decent sized legal team. If the state of the market wasn’t a consideration, there would be no question for me, but here we are…

Overheard at a big law firm:

"Why is everyone dressed the same here?"

"Because we’re a professional top tier law firm"

"OK, but I wish there was some room to be yourself"

"Maybe you should start working on yourself a little bit?"

At standard BigLaw firm, if you do not make partner, can you just stay on as counsel/senior associate indefinitely? Why don't we see more of that? The pay is still way better than in house. And I can see it actually being less stressful—probably less travel, less pressure to generate business, etc. Just be a service lawyer forever. Is that a thing?

A friend was told their firm will cut ties EOY if certain things don’t improve. Friend had planned to quit in the next year anyway (to start their own business), so there is no real incentive to bend over backwards. Friend’s goal is to keep the income for a little longer, but to minimize conflict / headaches. What’s the best move here? Wait until EOY and take the severance? Give 6 / 9 / 12 months’ notice now? Is there such a thing as too much notice? Could too much notice backfire?
