Absolutely! Make sure you put your complaint IN WRITING with the date, and follow up your meeting with HR with a email thanking them for listening to your concerns. Trust me...this is a must
Yes. Don’t let this kind of crap stand.
Keep a detailed record. Date, time, what was said. Then send in writing to HR. Once with HR they’ll reach out to you to discuss options to proceed. No one deserves to have a boss who bullies and belittles. Not right at all. Sounds like your co-workers probably feel the same. Do what’s right and go to HR my friend
Your HR department should be willing to keep this confidential, and may not act on it right away but it’s essential to get a complaint in now should things continue/escalate. It sounds like the treatment is not solely directed at you, so should HR need to confront your boss I wouldn’t be worried they’ll know it was you that alerted them (honestly, they probably already know if this has been going on) . Also, good lesson that we should all stay tuned in to how others are being treated even if they are not on our direct team and don’t be shy to mention 3rd party concern during HR catch ups.
I suggest you talk to your boss first. Put in context of your own performance.”When you criticize my efforts like you did yesterday, I question every thing I’m doing. Assuming you are satisfied with other work I’ve done, could we figure out a better way that will help me perform better ?” This gives your boss an opportunity to reflect and perhaps solve the problem. Since you are an aae, I’m guessing your supervisor might be young. Maybe they haven’t been groomed well. Maybe they would learn and grow and thank you. Managing up is as important if not more important than managing down You can always go to hr if direct communication doesn’t solve the problem.
I’m not saying not to raise with HR but be prepared for the sad possibility that nothing will happen and you will face retaliation. I agree with the suggestions to document the issue with substantial detail. Have a plan in place if the issue gets worse. Pushing the red button takes courage and I respect your considering it on behalf of yourself and the team around you. Organizations don’t always do the right thing however, especially ally if this person is “well connected". And keep in mind that unless there’s clear gender bias or discrimination, bullying, while absolutely wrong, isn’t illegal
All- I’m just afraid of making a really awkward working environment. Our relationship will be strained moving forward. I also know this person knows a lot of people in the industry and am afraid they won’t provide a good reference if/when I decide to move agencies
