@CD1 - My impression is that leadership is not seeing her as effective, but she is pretty high up (and likely feels the pressure to make moves to join leadership).

@SAS1 - this is where I'm starting to lean as well. But because I am also looking out for my direct reports and take a step back and see if there's anything else I can do as well

like

Why not go to her directly? Explain to her that you can see she is reaching for that leadership position, and that you want to help her succeed, but that she is breaking and weakening the very structure that will support her getting there. In fact, get the whole team in a room and tell her together. It is a technique that has worked a couple of times for me in the past.

I've pushed back in many instances and have been met with a lot of resistance (and even being told that I'm flat out wrong), but I don't feel good about the direction are going nor the team morale. How do I flag this without feeling like I'm undermining her?

Maybe she needs a little undermining? Don't really mean THAT word specifically but she's undermining her team and her agency as a whole right now and it's going to blow up if the situation is not diffused.

There are sound ways to do this but first may I ask - is she seen as effective right now by leadership or is she herself high up in leadership? Kinda matters in how to help handle the situation.

You won’t be able to change her mind if she’s set on this - start looking out for you and making plans for a move

*reports, I'm trying to take a step back...

Ah got it. Then you must go around her to senior leadership cause she's obviously trying real hard for that promotion, only she's destroying the soul of her group. (Leadership will see that too but from a different perspective and your perspective will be welcome if it's thoughtful and not vindictive.)

Here's an idea. Before you go to your department head ask another Dept head for advice on how to handle it. I always loved when account folk asked me how to handle something. (If you can't tell I'm OLD in this business)

Make sure your tone is 'concerned for the group that's about to jump ship' even though you may want to stick a fork in her eye.

All valid points here - still mulling it over. If I didn't have direct reports I would normally be more direct but I'm trying to massage the situation because I've seen her get quite aggressive (what I consider borderline hostile) when provoked (which is why I am not facing it head on like I'd prefer).
Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts and experiences!

Spend some time over the next few weeks doing your vision boards and manifestations for 2021. This summer I wrote down and then vision boarded many of the things I wanted to see, feel, earn, and do. As I head into the end of this dumpster fire of a year, many of the things I wrote down are beginning to emerge and happen. I know if you haven’t done it before it can seem “woo woo” or whatever, but this shit works. What have you got to lose? Try it!

Creatives: do you prefer being partnered with a man or woman?

Hi! I am interviewing at two jobs this week one at a big name agency and one in house in tech. I’m in my late twenties and would have to move for both. Is it crazy that I’m also thinking about benefits and where I would like to settle down too? I’ve always put career first, but feels like I should start considering personal life too. Am I putting too much pressure on myself?

A department lead (my level) has a rude communication style on Slack, criticizing work on public channels. However in a live conversation he’s great to work with. I called him out saying I wanted us to stop bickering on Slack esp as leaders and he shouldn’t bring morale down publicly this way. His response was around “I communicate however I want / the employees should get the message straight / they shouldn’t be coddled.” 🤦 What would you respond to that? We’re talking live soon. Cont

My friends want me to “say something” to HR. Namely bc I just learned I require IVF, and can’t afford it out of pocket.

But when I play this convo out in my mind, I can’t help wonder what I expect them, as a company, to say. “You’re right, we don’t.” “You should.” “K, thx.”

Also, I’m being considered for leadership and I don’t trust them not to negatively factor in the intel that I want to get pregnant.
