My boss said we can’t promote you because “we’ll loose you, and if we make you a manager, you won’t do the work that you’re currently doing”.. 🤔 thoughts?

Interesting. I had a colleague say something similar once. I had insight to her claim because I had previously worked in that department. They said they couldn't promote her to manager....but gave lame reasons why. They loved her work ethic and her accessibility. Raved about her chargeable hours. The real reason they couldn't promote her was because the practice didn't generate enough revenue to grow the practice and create room for growth. They had 4 partners and 2 Managing Directors. They were upside-down on their compensation model. I advised her to leave, but she stayed and ended up being separated in the recent business optimization process. I would advise you to leave. You should be rewarded for your contribution. You don't need anymore information to make the decision to leave. They have shown you all you need to know. Best wishes to you.

I was told I was doing great and to continue doing what I was but got a yearly raise that was less then inflation. I left right away.

At Deloitte it seems like everyone above consultant does a lot of unnecessary work. So personally I’d be happy to retain my title and just get a raise. As long as I’m doing interesting work with responsible adults I don’t care much about what my title is.

Tell them they lost you anyway and peace out if that is how they value your career progression

and they think you wouldn't quit knowing they have no plans to promote you? that logic is very flawed.

Exactly. OP should continue looking and leave ASAP. There’s no future no matter which path is taken there.

I would question this, ask things like can I train someone so the knowledge is retained. And most importantly is this your only justification for not promoting me? Sometimes it’s easy to give you the fluff answers

likeupliftinghelpful

I have been training a few people, so that down the line they could take up some of the tasks. I have another meeting setup to talk about that so let’s see!

That is not acceptable and HR should be notified.

Wow! That’s a tad selfish

In general when being promoted you are already doing work at the next level. Work shouldn’t change after promo. Feels like a poor supervisor not being straight with you.

My old boss told me the same thing and I ended up quitting. On top of dealing with a micro managing boss with a short temper, it was the last straw for me since it made me realize my job was basically a dead end and I was looking at my future in the company.

It’s time to leave. Not only do they not value you, they don’t even care to give a believable lie. Report him during your exit interview

So when you quit in October tell your Boss: I love you but I found someone better.

I remember a friend’s son saying he had to repeat kindergarten because “I was so smart the teacher asked me to stay to help the younger kids.” Sounds about the same.

S/he should get reported to HR. That’s such a self serving rationale, that’s lacking in values.

They are milking you for a while until you are canned. Get out now

Thank you all for sharing your thoughts. This has been really helpful. Now I know what I have to do.
