Some of this sounds extreme/an inability to set any personal boundaries, but a lot of it does resonate. Particularly the line about watching partners getting served dinner while on calls lol, I have had many midnight dinners bc calls ran over, we’re on video and it’s impossible to step away to grab food. I am a single female who lives alone and sometimes it’s so hard to take care of yourself while doing this job with no one around to help out.

D1 - Thats a silly argument. ACN is very consistently rated above Big4 in Strategy Consulting and SI work. Their comps and brand reflect that premium. In US, they have recently matched MBB comps above T2. And yet, they are able to maintain wlb for most of the employees coz they staff well and keep realistic expectations. You should probably do a case on them why they are so successful (see their share price skyrocketing in last year)

This resonated with me based on my experience at OW particularly during the pandemic. For some people, it takes 2 yrs of this to quit. For me, it was 2 projects. The first (and worst of the 2) project was right when COVID began, we got the work from home order about 2 wks after the project kicked off. I had a 5mo old baby and a 2 yr old that were also home with me (luckily I had a nanny). I was on back to back zoom calls from 8am to 5 or 5:30pm, I blocked off 5-8pm because that’s when my nanny left, and after the kids go to bed at 8, I started working again until midnight or 2am. This was M-F. I had no time to eat, or even shit. If I took a bathroom break, I’d be late for my next meeting. I was still breastfeeding when the project started and lost my milk supply because I couldn’t take breaks to feed my baby or pump during the day. You might say, well at least they respected the hours you blocked off so you could spend time with your family; or at least you didn’t have to work weekends. The 3 hrs I blocked off were not always respected, and that was far from “relax” time for me. If anything wrangling two little ones for 3 hrs was the most chaotic part of my day. It was also super hard on my family because they didn’t understand why they couldn’t see me when we were in the same house. I couldn’t say to my kids on Monday morning, ok mommy’s going to start work now, see you Friday evening! Of course nobody on the project team understood what it was like for me - the partners were male and had stay at home wives and older kids, the principal was male and unmarried. As a way of “accommodating” me, we had a standing call every night at 8pm when I came back online. This was when we would figure out what the team needed to work on in the evening. Sometimes these calls would last for over an hour if we were reviewing a model together or troubleshooting something. As a manager, I was responsible for the team’s wellbeing and project execution. So I asked the principals and partners for additional resources. Given the timeline was accelerated due to COVID, we probably needed 2-3 more people (doubling the current team). We got 1 person. After a few months of this, myself and members of my team burning out (we rolled one person off already), I did put my foot down and asked to roll off. I’ve never ever ask to leave a project before. But it was too taxing on me physically and mentally, and it was also deteriorating my marriage and my relationship with my kids. I couldn’t change the partners and principals (convince them that what they were asking for was unreasonable) so I just removed myself from the picture. I ended up getting a bad review on this project (the only non-stellar review I’ve had in my 7 yrs in consulting) that cost me my promotion to principal at the end of the year. So I guess this is to say: yes you can put your foot down, but if you’re going against what’s considered the norm, then the consequences will be on your own career and not change the firm overall. Moreover, this type of bad experience does not need to happen continuously for the firm to lose talent. It could happen just once or twice and that may be enough. I spent years in different geos and different practices at Oliver Wyman, had kids while traveling continuously and still felt supported enough to stay, and this experience was bad enough to make me leave.

Amazing for you! I am still around. I have some personal reasons for staying, and I landed in another practice area which, while intense, looks out for its people and does really fascinating work. I’ve been positioning myself for a niche role in industry that I think has massive potential, and once my time here is done, I’ll go there.

This is a tough piece and reflects many of the issues that I have been seeing with teams this last 18 months. But with a sense of humor, I say this “I probably spent about $50 a month on wine. I was probably drinking like half a bottle a night, about two bottles to myself during the work week.” That is really bad wine. Best not to drink it all off if you are going to drink that bad of wine. Back to a serious note. I have never drank alone before Covid and also found that one glass of wine that started with zoom happy hours turning into a daily habit. That is bad.

Things definitely got worse in consulting over the past 18 months. You could vent to colleagues, and you had more downtime. Commuting to/from client site, flights, time walking to and in lunch lines, and other mundane things added up to several hours per week of time to decompress. That decompression and those venting opportunities not only don't exist now, they have been replaced by more work.

like

Why do so many consultants not understand the concept of no. Say no. Refuse. Set boundaries. What are they going to do, fire you? How would that matter, it’s 2021, you can hop on LinkedIn and have another 6 figure job through video interviews in 3 weeks. Say NO.

likeupliftingfunny

I think you’re underestimating how important working for McKinsey is to many who work for McKinsey.

likefunnysmart

Sadly, a lot of this rings true - particularly during COVID. Consulting was a lot more sustainable pre-COVID, primarily because you could vent with your teammates.

Lol who would work at this place. No thank you. What a bunch of losers - working a job that makes you cry. Have some self respect

Well they left the job so they were reflecting on it. I’d you’re a young woman with student debt at McKinsey there is a high incentive to suck it up for at least 2 years to set up the rest of your life for success. Crying for awhile might be worth it.

Anyone who lets it get this bad - outside of crunch time like a system launch or critical go-live - isn’t managing correctly; either the work isn’t scoped properly or someone isn’t setting boundaries.

Totally agree D2. Obviously I could be better at balance, but I’m currently meeting with the CFO of a fortune 100 company 3 times a week. There is basically no way to not be constantly stressed and exhausted when you’re trying to deliver work while also managing high visibility meetings all the time. There’s never a break or down time.

Getting calls before 10pm is normal and expected. Getting calls after midnight is not.

like

It’s definitely normal at bcg. Not saying it happens everyday, but if my partner calls me at 9:30pm, I would pick up.

Covid was terrible for our the junior staff in our industry. Expectations for quality don’t change - but we don’t teach nearly as well. Poor analyst was in a no-win situation. That being said, we get paid big bucks for the sacrifices we have to make.

Sigh. Nearing the end of the McK interview process and am still unsure what to do if I get an offer. Money and exit ops will be good, but I’m not sure I want to sell my soul. Maybe it’ll be fine for a few years, but I imagine that is what everyone says going in…

Consulting, as we know is tough, but this sounds extremely sensationalist and extreme even for M

Happened to me and several people I know. It’s ridiculous, but true.

like

I remember watching a video about a McK partner sharing little tips and tricks. One of them was setting boundaries and committing to them. So for him, starting from when he was a junior, it meant telling his team he needed x hours for so and so and then not compromising on it.
