My brother has an apparent drinking problem. He’s had two DWIs and stopped drinking after the 2nd. My SIL called tonight to tell me he has started drinking again and will pick up wine from a gas station and drive around and drink it in his car. He tried AA before but “didn’t like the crowd” there. If I had to guess I think he thinks he’s above them and has his shit together and doesn’t need help. All that to say I’m wondering if there are AA groups targeting professionals?

It’s easy for AA to be beneath you until it isn’t anymore. Alcoholism is the great equalizer... it doesn’t care about your perceived social positioning.

AA groups by their nature aren’t “targeting”; they’re open to everyone, from all walks of life, which is part of what makes it so special. Each group however, does sort of form it’s own personality, but even that is likely to evolve over a long enough time period. I’m lucky enough to have found an amazing group in a wealthy neighborhood, but any given meeting will have an executive, a retired business owner, a house wife, a young kid, and a bunch of average Joes and Jolenes. When you need a meeting, it doesn’t matter where you are or who else is in the room; the guy living on the street might have the recovery wisdom that you need that day to stay sober or to find serenity.

The key is to stop looking for the differences, and start looking for the similarities. They might not look like you look, they might not have drank like you drank, but if you listen to their story, you might come to realize that you feel exactly how they felt.

AA is referred to as “the last house on the block”. Most of us have tried to “control it” on our own will power, or we switch what we drink, or we change who we drink with, or we read some books, or take a week or month off from drinking, or we see therapists, and doctors, and take meds to stop the cravings. None of it works; not because the remedies aren’t right, it’s because the only constant is us and we’re not changing. Wherever I go, there I am. AA isn’t the only way to get sober, but it is working for me and my life is immeasurably better. I’m a different person because of AA, and that’s the only way I stay sober. I am an alcoholic and I am powerless over alcohol; meaning I need to find something greater than myself to bring about recovery. AA is a great place to find that Power.

Those are hard to find but his company likely has EAP which can hook him up with therapy. They will then convince him - if they think they should- to get into AA or even a rehab program. This sounds serious. It’s worth it. Take it from me. Feel free to DM me to talk.

This is literally my husband except it's vodka not wine and he feels the same way about AA.

You can’t force someone to AA but you can definitely take care of yourself. Hopefully you e found peace through Al-Anon or similar. ❤️

It is tough to find those types of groups and tough for someone with that attitude to get over it. This may sound silly but if you are near some affluent neighborhoods/towns i bet you might find a meeting - maybe a discussion meeting - where they will be surprised who is in the meeting and it will have people they may be able to relate with at the beginning. If they get it they will relate with all eventually. It is an elevator and just a matter of how far down you go...

Depending on his career path there are AA groups that aren’t endorsed by AA for certain professions like “lawyers helping lawyers“ or “doctors helping doctors”... etc, also the meetings in high-end/expensive areas are usually a good crowd.

My spouse and I met at a rave 7 years ago. At the time we were dabbling in various recreational drugs (acid, mushrooms, weed, k, molly, alcohol etc), but over the years we've slowly cut back drug use.

I've always been v connected to the rave scene, and before I ever tried drugs I would attend events sober. These days, w my career and where I'm at in life, I'm back to going sober.

2months ago, he decided to white knuckle sobriety (except alcohol 🙄) and has become v judgemental of ravers contd

So I wanted to share my experience and see if it helps anyone else out there. I was not an alcoholic, but I was definitely alcohol abusive.
