McKinsey & Company Bain & Company Hey everyone -
Not the exact right bowl, but looking for advice/referrals for a close family friend trying to break into ESG/climate change/sustainability consulting.
They have ~7 YOE in finance (mostly junk debt, some S&T) and 20 YOE in development banking at an IGO (think World Bank, doing everything from public debt offerings, infrastructure, etc. all w heavy ESG/compliance requirements).
Thanks for the help!

What is the common feedback across clients about:
A. Projects
B. Deliverables
C. Teams
In general, it’s better to underpromise and over deliver so they’re delighted.
How have you been positioning your sales vs how are your solutions teams showing up?
You sound really disconnected from the projects - you weren’t aware that the projects weren’t going well previously, and now, you don’t have any specific feedback from the client and an understanding of what went wrong. AVP, you need to stop gliding at the 30k level and simply being the face of the project and actually lead / deliver.

At AVP level, you’re not senior enough to be hands-off. Great pivot, and hope you develop your teams so you can trust them autonomously
Cut down on the fluff/bullsh1t part and bring some techno functional people to replace it with things that can be translated into requirements and make sure those requirements can translate into things that we can actually build.

Why are they unhappy?
+1 and also why the team you sold is not able to make them happy? (Overloaded, underpaid, not interested, unrealistic expectations etc.)
As mentioned above...do the triage with the clients to understand their perspective. If need be bring a senior person along as well (seeing your role that may be the C level if it is serious enough). Make the client feel like they are being seen and heard.
Also, it helps to talk to the project teams and figure out where the internal disconnect may be (may be nothing other than managing client expectations or maybe a major personality conflict between client and PM/project lead).
Either way it is not fun and can be a a loss of client projects if the client feels like they have not been heard.

Similar feedback on SLT/board level decks. It goes through so many client iterations before it gets there, I’m not sure how to fix
