Omg, this isn’t even a men’s issues versus women’s issue question. Family planning/fertility IS a men’s issue too. The thing about egg freezing is that it is literally the exact same procedure as IVF, just less the fertilization and implantation steps. Women still have to go through all the hormone injections/harvesting to get the eggs. It’s probably less expensive since it doesn’t go through the final procedures. It’s a bit ridiculous a company would cover IVF but not egg freezing. Whoever sits around deciding what gets covered and what doesn’t are some judgy motherfuckers. Maybe it’s perceived that people who only want to freeze eggs aren’t, and might not ever be, ready to have kids? Maybe it’s cause agency turnover rates are so high there’s a good chance that the employee might not even be there by the time they want to use their eggs? I mean really, anyone who wants kids should be lining up to freeze their eggs at like 25. Not only does quantity go down, but quality of what you have also degrades and fertility falls off a cliff at 35. Freezing your eggs just gives you options. But make no mistake that this is a simple or easy procedure. Only people who are dead set on having kids someday would be willing to put themselves through it
They just addressed this on The Bold Type on ABC Fam. Reaching as far up the food chain as you can with a personal narrative seemed to do the trick on that show for what it’s worth
You’re advocating firms spend roughly $20,000 to set up and store an employee’s eggs for a year, plus the ongoing costs. You’re either severely overestimating how much advertising values its employees, or joking.
The truth is if it were a men’s issue, it wouldn’t be an issue. They’d have coverage.

Your assumption is completely sexist. It's healthcare coverage, so it's not free. I'm sure there's options for ivf to get coverage. So please get out of your male privilege bubble for two seconds.
They're doing it because they're competing like hell with each other to attract top talent. Not because they're altruistic about providing reproductive options for their employees. And I'd bet it's far more about about attracting programmers/R&D people, not their in-house marketing and design teams. I'm not sure this industry is in such an explosive growth state that it needs to provide $20k worth of egg-freezing benefits to every employee. They can probably just offer more cash to key players to achieve the desired result.
Programming new ways to make people poorer and more addicted to an app, working for startups that make nothing aren't adding value to people's lives we all just exist to make rich shareholders more money. So if someone wants to freeze their eggs and wait until the sexist advertising world won't ruin her career for daring to have a family, it would be great pr for advertising firms in the long run to take care of their employees.
I’m sure you already know this, but definitely use Apple, Facebook and Google as examples. Maybe even reach out to them and see if you can talk to someone about how it got implemented. I have a contact at Facebook if you need a lead!

What about their female employees who already have kids? Or can’t produce eggs? Or don’t want kids? Or can’t have them? Or their male employees? Do they all get to choose how they’d like their additional $20k benefits each allocated?
And what about agencies that offer paid maternity leave but not paternity? Is that a sexist issue in your opinion as well?
@Director 1, its a personal health decision. Employers provide health benefits, and directly say what they will and will not cover (physical therapy, chiropractic care, orthotics etc). These are all broken down as different types of coverage determined by your company. Fertility and family planning are part of your health insurance benefit. Some places have IVF coverage, why not take it one step farther and cover the procedure for egg freezing? Storage, on the other hand, is a different expense

There's not much you can do currently aside from speaking to the leadership of the company Benefits are so behind and often stingy. I think egg freezing is family planning there could be a compelling argument there if you present them with the resources.
100% agree with Sr AD 1, those tech companies are competing with all the other tech companies for crazy talented employees. We're in advertising...
I agree with most of what you’re saying FCB2 but no I don’t think it’s a men’s issue. Debate aside - anything we can actually do to change that it’s not covered even though IVF meds are the same?
@OP, my points was that Women’s Rights are Human Rights. I’m guessing find a company that has policies that support long-term investment in their employees? Advertising, in general, has a better short game than long game when it comes to policies that support employees outside of work lives. Insurance has a funny way of analyzing cost and weighing medical necessity. I’m guessing this is considered an elective procedure unless you’re following through with fertilization/implantation. I’m wondering if this benefit can be managed outside of insurance so as not to impact the overall policy/costs for the office. I wonder if there are any egg freezing third parties that offer a direct plan/benefit. I think it’s worth bringing up to HR, like yesterday, since annual benefit enrollment is going to start in the next couple of months
