My company hosts "voluntary" company parties, which they insist upon yet end up being just pizza and doing emails. I want to get paid overtime for staying beyond the clock. Should I ask?

Work is everything that has to do with the use of office time, even if it is a voluntary meeting, it must be paid for as it falls within working hours.

Yes!

Yes. Technically it illegal in some states to not get paid for working off the clock.

I'll check if it's legal cause I'd rather not be here if at all possible lol

smart

I think that if you do that you will bother more than one person, it is preferable that you ask to leave during the party for reasons of time, say that the train gets very full or something like that.

I haven't seen anyone leave early from one so I'm thinking it's one of those mandatory voluntary parties

You shouldn't, whatever it is, it's a management that the company has with you, rather try to improve the environment yourself, you'll appreciate it.

Just feels like I'm not getting paid to be at work, is that normal?

You should ask if you are still in the office, obviously, it is something that is regulated, therefore it must be paid, ask your immediate boss before going to higher levels.

"voluntary" but mandatory? If so, they must be paid hours for everyone, since they do not have the option of leaving the office, surely if they need them to work during that meeting they will have to do it.

that's what I'm thinking, i'll ask around and see what others around here think

You should check if they are really voluntary and if so, you are free to stop assisting.

If they're not you bet I'm never coming to one of these again haah

Extra time at work will require extra pay depending on contract requirements

Need some advice! Should we update our wedding start time to 4pm so we can have our after party 10pm-1am instead of 5pm wedding start and 11pm-1am after party? We sent wedding invites with a 5pm start time because we have 6hrs at the venue and the bar around the corner said the after party had to be 11pm-1am. Now bar said thee after party can start at 10pm. We can realistically contact all who RSVPd yes to let them know AND a 4pm start time means we still have daylight (it’s a winter wedding).

Do NOT claim you are "colorblind" in the workplace. 1. DE&I knowledge is now a core leadership competency. Colorblind claims will earn you the reputation of being DEI-ignorant at best & racist at worst. 2. Colorblindness within the context of workplace diversity is an obvious lie. You do NOT want to be painted as an intellectually dishonest leader. 3. Colorblind claims signal that you lack the leadership skills & vocabulary to have key conversations. I'm (27F) making 4x more than my partner (33M). How do you deal with significant income differences in your relationships?

I'm dating a guy and we just had a serious discussion about our finances. I just learned that I earn 4x more than him (200K). We're based in Portland, OR and he's a bank teller and I'm a designer fortunate to be paid SF rates. I'd like to get married and have kids one day and not feel the pressure of being the breadwinner. How have others managed a similar situation?
