On one hand I say yes I'd quit but given current job market make sure you have something lined up first. Until then masks, gloves and sanitizer will be your saviors.

Personally I would wait to be fired, but in the meantime look for a new job.
If enough of your workforce doesn’t comply the company will likely have to listen to some extent . Of course this might require a good number of staff just not going back - depending on size corporate might be forced to listen.
Depending on your location they may not have a choice - infection rates are picking up in the tri state area so the state governments are not allowing for full openings and even doing smaller targeted lockdowns - but if you’re in a place like Florida or Texas you’re probably SOL since they are pretty open.
I’m in Texas and office won’t be back to normal vacancy until 2021 or until the government gives to go ahead.

what's a "showdown" in this context? Why is your company interested in "forcing" people back to the office?
It seems pretty clear that if they want you back in the office and you don’t go, they fire you. Obviously from a corporate perspective they think they have the leverage to force it. I guess time will tell.
We were on a call last week and some of our partners are fine with status quo others want their teams back together and are hoping to use clients to leverage that goal.
Some of our clients basically never shut down others are saying they want a vaccine before 3rd parties will be allowed in the office.
I'm old, they can fire me. Are they going to waive people with higher risks? That would include over 1/3rd of the work force.
