My company is adopting Scrum and hiring a bunch of agile coaches to assist with sprints. We got assigned our agile coach that'll be starting soon.

I read a description of what this role is supposed to be for and it sounds like they'll be leading Scrum ceremonies. So they run the planning meeting, the retrospective and daily stand ups. Up to now, I've been doing those and it's taken a total of like 2 hours a week of my time.

What on earth do agile coaches do with the other 95% of their time?

I honestly think the scrum master is probably the most over rated job . Once the team is self-sustaining, there is no value to a scrum master . However most roles don't truly work that way. At my previous client, the scrum master would read the stories a day before and then walk the entire team thru the stories in the grooming session . I was the BA who wrote the stories , so I never understood the point of having another person walk the team thru the stories when I'm in the meeting and am the one who wrote the stories . Scrum master roles are weird . With that said , I wanna be a scrum master so I can do nothing and still get paid for it

I believe a scrum master is best fitted for a company specialize in a mirage of software, application and tools for unlimited number of clients. I once was on a team of a small company. The application was huge but it wasn't a bunch of applications. We waited almost 3 weeks for requirements while doing nothing. The scum master, who was contracted, said that if he waits one more week he's going to take a month off. Yep. I guess he was earning that much. My career path is on Solutions Architect.

Are these agile coaches assigned to multiple teams? If so, they would be running your team's ceremonies in addition to others so kinda like how a Scrum Master does it.

They probably will also meet with other members of your team (like the Product people) to show how all this looks on the analytics side when it's all being tracked. You'll probably start hearing terms like "effort", "time estimate", "velocity", "resources", etc which can get annoying but those analytics are usually looked at by upper management in the company.

It sounded like a more senior agile coach might have two teams or so. The agile coach my team was assigned is only assigned to my team - I guess that means he's a junior? 🤷

As an agile coach here is what I’m doing:
1) Understand the business and the contribution of my assigned team
2) understand our project/product
3) understand the tech we’re using to provide a solution
4) build the self sustained team until they work in a state of flow and continuous improvement (basically what you’ve described)
5) Talk to the product people about an incremental and iterative approach to find out what it makes sense to iterate on
6) Understand the Tech dependencies that go along with an iterative approach
7) Facilitate the feedback oriented relationship between the team and the user/customer until the team continuously learns about the User/Customer
8) leave and repeat somewhere else

Where would you go from here if you were me? Was making good money at the midsize...

Would request you to kindly refer if you have any relevant opportunities in your company. Thanks.

How do you feel about your job? Either your current position right now or your general role as a SWE - do you genuinely enjoy it and have a passion for it, tolerate it and collect the paycheck, or hate it? Does the industry you’re in have an impact on your answer - e.g. FAANG vs. fintech vs. ed tech? Personally after switching companies I’ve gone from hating to tolerance, but I feel like I’m never going to be excited about what I’m doing.
